🦴As we recognize Sarcoma/Bone Cancer Awareness Month, it's crucial to shine a light on key markers in clinical and research that play roles in our understanding of this disease. CD99, also known as MIC2, is a cell surface protein with significant diagnostic utility in the field of immunohistochemistry (IHC), particularly in the context of bone and soft tissue tumors. ✨CD99 is a critical immunohistochemical marker in the diagnosis of bone tumors, particularly for identifying Ewing sarcoma/pPNET due to its high sensitivity and specificity for these tumors. ✨Its strong membranous staining pattern is a hallmark for Ewing sarcoma, making it an essential part of the diagnostic panel for small round blue cell tumors in bone and soft tissue such as: Rhabdomyosarcoma: CD99 is usually negative or shows only focal positivity in rhabdomyosarcoma, aiding in differentiation. Neuroblastoma: Neuroblastomas typically do not express CD99, helping distinguish them from Ewing sarcoma.
