🚨 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗧 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀, 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀? 🚨 📢"Our dependence on IT systems is growing, and therefore, the problems affect us more, seem to happen more, and have more visibility in the media", notes INESC-ID specialist in cybersecurity, Miguel Pupo Correia. The board member at INESC-ID and head of the Computer Science and Engineering Department (DEI Técnico), at Técnico, summarizes the reasons why the software failure occurred, shows us how can we prevent it from happening again and talks about the lessons learned from the incident: 🔍 The Incident: A bug in CrowdStrike's cybersecurity software led to a global blackout, impacting airports, supermarkets, and TV stations. Compounded by a failure in Microsoft's Azure cloud service, this incident highlighted vulnerabilities in our IT infrastructure. 💡 Causes: - The primary issue was a bug in CrowdStrike's software. - Lack of thorough testing before deployment. - The propagation of faulty software to millions of devices. - Manual fixes were required, causing significant disruption. 🛡️ Prevention and Mitigation: While total prevention isn't feasible, we can manage and mitigate risks through: - Fault Prevention: Avoiding the introduction of faults. - Fault Tolerance: Ensuring faults don’t lead to system failures. - Fault Removal: Reducing the number and severity of faults. - Fault Forecasting: Predicting and preparing for potential faults. 👥 Impact on Businesses and Individuals: From critical business operations to personal tasks, our reliance on IT systems necessitates contingency planning. Maintaining the ability to perform activities manually can be a crucial fallback. 📈 Lessons Learned: 1. Manage Expectations: Realize that IT systems, while reliable, are not infallible. 2. Identify Dependencies: Be aware of critical points of failure, especially in crucial moments like thesis presentations or business operations. 3. Continuous Improvement: Invest in better fault management and forecasting techniques. 🔗 The full conversation here 👇 https://lnkd.in/dwQU9sXM #ITsecurity #Cybersecurity #IST #DEI #DigitalResilience #ITInfrastructure #Microsoft #Blackout
