About us
The Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) aims to translate health research and innovation into real benefits for patients and society, and ensure that Europe remains at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary, sustainable, patient-centric health research. Health research and care increasingly involve diverse sectors. By supporting projects that bring these sectors together, IHI will pave the way for a more integrated approach to health care, covering prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and disease management. IHI is a partnership between the European Union and European industry associations representing the pharmaceutical, medical technology, biotechnology, digital health and vaccine industries, namely COCIR, EFPIA (including Vaccines Europe), EuropaBio, and MedTech Europe. IHI’s total budget is EUR 2.4 billion. Half of this comes from Horizon Europe, the EU’s research and innovation programme. The IHI industry partners have committed EUR 1 billion to IHI, and a further EUR 200 million can be committed by other organisations that decide to become Contributing Partners. IHI builds on the successes of the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), which ran from 2008 to 2021. The IHI Programme Office continues to manage and promote projects launched under IMI. 📢 VICT3R: Advancing the EC’s Roadmap for Alternative Methods for Safety Assessments We’re excited to share key takeaways from our participation in the 2nd European Commission Conference on the Roadmap to phase out animal testing for chemical safety assessments, held in Brussels on Friday, 25th October. It was encouraging to see VICT3R’s progress recognized as a meaningful step forward in delivering on the European Commission’s (EC) vision for reducing animal testing and integrating New Approach Methods into safety testing. Our work directly supports the EC’s ambitious roadmap, which aims to replace, reduce, and refine animal testing (the 3Rs) across a range of chemical safety regulations, including REACH and biocides. The EC’s roadmap is groundbreaking, involving multiple stages of action—from developing non-animal testing methods to prioritizing acceptance and regulatory adoption across the EU. At VICT3R, we’re contributing to these milestones by developing Virtual Control Groups (VCGs) that leverage AI, statistics and historical data to reduce animal usage in toxicity testing by up to 25%, aligning perfectly with the roadmap’s ambitious goals. During the conference, VICT3R representatives established valuable connections with regulators, agencies and animal protection associations critical to furthering these goals. We are encouraged by the Commission’s commitment to foster data sharing and collaboration across Member States, laying the groundwork for a unified approach to alternative methods. These conversations mark a key step in translating scientific innovation into impactful regulatory shifts. Individuals with #psoriasis have a risk of developing #psoriaticarthritis, a condition that leads to swelling and pain of the joints. Maarten de Wit, who has psoriatic arthritis himself, is actively involved as a patient research partner with HIPPOCRATES. With all three of his children also having psoriasis - and therefore the potential to develop psoriatic arthritis - he views the HIPPOCRATES Prospective Observational (HPOS) Study as an important opportunity to explore ways of prevention. 💡 The HPOS Study aims to better determine which psoriasis patients may develop psoriatic arthritis.
