#Today at the FAO LEAP Partnership session: "A 12-year success story", IDF, Director General, Laurence Rycken, described the successful experience of collaboration within the global dairy sector: the case of the LCA methodology.
"In 2022, we launched a new guide – the IDF carbon footprint standard for the dairy sector as the importance of assessing using carbon foot printing in the dairy sector increased exponentially", Ms Rycken explained.
"It was done by more than 50 experts coming from over 17 different countries. The purpose of this guide is to support the dairy sector in mitigating GHG emissions to reduce its potential impact on global climate change. The goal is to guide dairy sector on the reporting (corporate or product) of GHG emissions from all life cycle stages", she added
"At the same time, in 2022, IDF released, the IDF C-sequestration methodology, for quantification carbon sequestration using LCA and carbon footprint studies both above and below-ground. This IDF guideline complements the FAO LEAP guidelines on carbon stock, as the FAO LEAP guidance provides comprehensive recommendations and steps to perform soil organic carbon sampling, which are not covered by the IDF guide", Ms Rycken stated.
"As we continue to improve the methodologies and tools for our sector to monitor, asses and improve itself, it is clear that there needs to be a Harmonization throughout the livestock sector. All parts and stakeholder must sit around the table as we are only one part of the puzzle", she continued.
"LEAP provides that platform to bring the different sector on the development of standards for environmental performance of livestock together to work collaboratively, enabling an agreement on how to measure environmental impacts and benefits from livestock in a similar way. Therefore, we look forward to the continued journey", Ms Rycken concluded.
