Koios Care Progress Update Our recent #Parkinson's #Disease #Quality of #Life trial involved an ambitious undertaking: to objectively and continuously measure quality of life and disease impact based on passive raw data from users' smartphones and smartwatches. Technical Challenges and Solutions: Developing this solution presented significant engineering challenges. We aimed to find the optimal balance between collecting clinically meaningful information and ensuring long-term user adherence for continuous monitoring. Here's how we addressed these challenges: A) Deployment for Naturalistic Behavior: We simulated real-world usage patterns by having participants use their own devices and various commercial smartwatches for passive actigraphy and physiological sensing. This required extensive engineering expertise (kudos to Konstantinos Kyritsis, Apostolos Moustaklis, Vasileios Papapanagiotou), testing across smartwatch vendors, continuous sensor verification, and adaptability to #Android operating system updates. B) Real-World Data Collection: We partnered with five clinical sites (kudos to Patricia Van Rompuy) for decentralized, rolling recruitment of participants, gathering data from real-world use. The attached heatmap visualizes the hours of wearable data contribution per person over time, allowing us to monitor vendor, user, and site behavior. C) Advanced Data Analysis: We are developing cutting-edge AI capabilities to passively sense Quality of Life changes in Parkinson's disease from wearable device data. Our Q-index approach is rooted in signal processing techniques (e.g., noise cancellation), focusing on the differential signal of change to reduce common-mode noise. This principle aims to provide objective insights into disease impact and enable personalized interventions by capturing real-world patient experiences. We're excited to see transferability of core Quality of Life monitoring concepts to other therapeutic areas so early in the process. Our research demonstrates the potential of wearable technology for capturing objective, real-world data that can drive a continuum of personalized healthcare solutions powered by passive-sensing and context-aware #AI.
