IFLA Europe _PECHA KUCHA 2024 - Focus on selected belgian projects Flagey Square - Kollektif Landscape Localisation : Flagey Square, Ixelles - Bruxelles Client : Commune d'Ixelles | Bruxelles Mobilité - Brussel Mobiliteit collab with BMA - Bouwmeester Maitre Architecte Team : fallow | ecorce Contractor : Krinkels In 2021, the municipality of Ixelles and the Brussels Region, in collaboration with the Brussels City Architect (BMA), selected four teams to develop and present their ideas for an ecological transformation of the iconic Flagey Square and the adjacent Sainte-Croix Square. The proposal by the team Kollektif, Fallow and Ecorce was selected as the winner. The project proposes an ambitious and gradual greening and demineralisation strategy for both squares, building on the design concepts of the original plan by Latz + Partners in 2007. The proposal includes the integration of organic patches of green, approximately 2,000 square metres, and the planting of 60 new trees. The new green spaces also act as rain gardens to buffer excess rainwater, capturing a third of the total run-off from the squares. In addition, the planting areas for existing trees will be improved to provide better conditions for growth, including drainage, substrate and aeration. The interventions aim to bring a more human scale to the squares and enhance the experience of nature. In collaboration with Faculté d'Architecture La Cambre Horta de l'ULB students, a workshop was held to explore the needs and preferences of the site's users. Based on these findings, new green zones were designed to provide more intimate and inviting spaces for relaxation and social interaction. The planting strategy emphasises natural growth with a focus on seasonal changes, ensuring a visually appealing environment throughout the year. This approach not only enhances aesthetics, but also promotes a stronger connection between people and their environment. The incorporation of the green spaces is strongly guided by the underground and above-ground boundary conditions. Below ground, in addition to a car park, there is a large storm water basin with several control rooms. The square itself hosts many activities such as the fair, circus, weekly markets, Christmas market, etc. Place Flagey is one of the most important event squares in the Brussels region. Excited to share some photos from the first phase of our greening project for the Flagey and Sainte-Croix Squares in Brussels. These new planters reinforce the original 'central open pond' concept by Latz and Partners, while adding rain gardens, shade and nature experiences to the area. Competition Thyssen-Areal in Köln (Cologne) won! Great news! Our team Neutelings Riedijk Architects and Kollektif Landscape won the prestigious SORAVIA architectural competition for the redevelopment of the former Thyssen industrial site in Stadt Köln - Ehrenfeld. The project includes a transformative vision for the historic steel hall (21.000 m2), envisioning it as a vibrant hub for events, offices and urban life. The landscape design includes a unique fusion of ecology, architecture and industrial heritage. Competition Moorkensplein Antwerp won! Following consultations with the local community, our proposal for the Moorkensplein in Borgerhout was selected as winner by the jury. Moorkensplein is proposed as a dynamic and engaging green oasis featuring climate adaptation measures and elements for people of all ages to enjoy.
