🚀 Excited to share that last week, I started my three-month stay as a visiting scientist at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Ispra. I’ll mainly work with Lewis Dijkstra and Marcello Schiavina on new developments of the Degree of Urbanisation methodology 🏙️. I’m looking forward to contributing to this relevant project and, of course, taking the chance to explore the beautiful surroundings of Lago Maggiore while I’m here 🏔️. Thanks to Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen (FWO) for the funding which makes this research visit possible.

🏙️ What began as an exploratory project with Krasen Samardzhiev and Freke Caset evolved into a collaborative paper in the IJGIS Our article contributes to the discussion on reducing reliance on predefined parameters in urban delineation approaches. Using building footprint data from the Netherlands, we compare four approaches with decreasing numbers of predefined parameters and evaluate their suitability based on both practical and empirical dimensions. CirCoCreation enters the research world with a new logo! The project aims to enhance urban sustainability by fostering citizen involvement in circular construction practices. It seeks to establish a cohesive ecosystem, leveraging living labs for co-creation and developing metrics to track and inspire material reuse. A great example of transdisciplinary research engagement. And another learning opportunity for our KU Leuven team (with Hanne Vrebos, Karel Van Acker and Luc Alaerts) in aligning different perspectives from experts operating in different regions of Europe.
