Gisteren vond de laatste opleiding van Lydian Academy West "Bouwrecht in Beweging - Trends, uitdagingen en praktische inzichten" plaats waarbij onze sprekers Jan Maertens en Emiel Debouck de laatste ontwikkelingen in het bouwrecht presenteerden. Proud selfie moment 📸 ❣️ This is the (back then) President of the UIA Union Internationale des Avocats Jacqueline Scott, the President of the International Bar Association Almudena Arpón de Mendívil and myself, attending the UIA Annual Congress in Paris last week in my capacity as President of AIJA - International Association of Young Lawyers. 🖋️👩⚖️ Numbers vary across countries but the trend is still this: #women make up a significant percentage of #lawyers worldwide, but hold significantly less senior roles within their firms and organisations. 💪 That's why international associations like ours are so important, and truly make a difference when they empower and support women to take on leadership roles. 👏 At AIJA, over 49% of our membership consists of women, and over 50% of the officer positions within AIJA are held by women. With the support of our AIJA Women Network chaired by Maria (Mia) Jennerholm, Fernanda Souto Pacheco, Margherita Stucchi and Hana Al Khatib and our AIJA Diversity Officer Jean-Rodolphe Fiechter, all of our members (including men!) strive for a more diverse legal profession. Because it is fair. Or if that doesn't convince you, because diverse organisations consistently outperform their non-diverse peers across industries, any day. 🙏 As a woman, as a mother and as an employment lawyer I am proud and grateful that this is on the forefront of legal associations' agendas and that I have the privilege to contribute to this big and important effort. 💡Also last week, AIJA signed the UIA Charter of Fundamental Principles On Access to Justice for Women Victims of Violence, an initiative launched by the wonderful Elisabeth Zakharia Sioufi, President of the UIA Women's Committee and featured in the second proud picture of this post. Gender based violence does not only include physical violence, as Begoña Lasagabaster, Director of the Division for Gender Equality at UNESCO explained to us last week. It occurs on a daily basis, online, too. You'll hear more about the effects of misogyny and gender based violence on women's health, careers and personal lives during the joint AIJA Women Network and AIJA Human Rights Committee (Silvia Van Schaik, Michel Segers and Charlotte Tregunna) session during the upcoming Annual Congress in Washington DC (Katja Garvey and Dr. Jens Uwe Rügenhagen). Thanks to the efforts of our Academic Coordinators Friederike Henke, Radina Tomanova, Timothée Giard and Christian Ritschka, I am very happy to announce this is the first confirmed session of the academic program they are currently preparing for us!
