On the Road to Tomorrow's Construction Materials. Alkali-activated materials (AAM) and geopolymers (GP) are eco-friendly mineral materials with high circularity potential, complementing conventional concrete, especially for civil engineering applications. Such materials, already implemented in Belgium during the 1950s (under the Purdocement patent), are making a comeback to address current environmental challenges. In Europe, Belgium is once again taking the initiative by developing a standard (NBN) to regulate these materials in civil engineering applications. The INISMa-CRIBC (BCRC) , involved in GP research and in construction material development, has joined forces with BE-CERT, Buildwise, ResourceFull, FEBE , and other national and cross-border stakeholders in this initiative. Lorsqu'un incendie s'est déclaré dans la ville américaine de #Baltimore en 1904, on a appelé des renforts en provenance d'autres villes. Arrivés sur les lieux de l'incendie, les #pompiers se sont aperçus qu’ils ne pouvaient pas raccorder leurs lances à incendie sur les bouches d'incendie locales. En conséquence, le feu brûla pendant près de 30 heures, détruisant 1 526 bâtiments sur près de 70 pâtés de maisons. Depuis 1870, des tentatives ont été faites pour normaliser les systèmes. Cependant, les villes ne voyaient aucune raison d’abandonner leur propre système et d’investir dans de nouveaux équipements. 🚒 Il existe aujourd'hui des normes ISO sur la sécurité incendie et les lances d'incendie (NBN EN ISO 14557:2021) pour garantir que cettes tragédies ne se reproduise plus. 🔥 Wanneer in 1904 brand uitbrak in de Amerikaanse stad Baltimore, werd er versterking opgeroepen uit andere steden. Eens op de plek van de brand aangekomen realiseerden ze zich dat hun brandslangen niet op de lokale brandkranen konden worden aangesloten. Ze konden enkel toekijken hoe het grootste deel van Baltimore tot as werd herleid. Nochtans waren er reeds sinds 1870 pogingen om de systemen te standardiseren. De steden zagen echter geen reden om hun eigen systeem op te geven en te investeren in nieuwe uitrusting. 🚒 Tegenwoordig zijn er ISO-normen over brandveiligheid en brandslangen (NBN EN ISO 14557:2021) die moeten zorgen dat dit soort tragedies niet opnieuw gebeuren.
