This week, Brussels welcomed researchers from The Arctic Six for a series of meetings aimed at strengthening Arctic research on the EU agenda. The regional offices in the Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA)—North Sweden European Office, East & North Finland EU Office, and North Norway European Office—organised the visit for the Arctic Six university network.   The delegation met with Members of the European Parliament engaged in Arctic policy, national representations of EU Arctic states, and key European Commission services involved in Arctic matters.   The EU is already a major funder of research supporting the sustainability and development of its Arctic regions. With negotiations on the next EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10) approaching, it is crucial for both northern regions and Arctic universities that the Arctic remains a priority. Yesterday, Mikael M Janson and Max Englund from North Sweden met the Cabinet at EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen, together with representatives from the Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA) network. Taru Haapaniemi, Member of Cabinet, welcomed the NSPA offices, together with Laura Salo, Programme Manager at DG Agri at the European Commission. We very much appreciate the possibility to meet and deliver our NSPA position on EU regional development policy and the position of the Eriaff network for rural and forested regions around in Europe on EU forest-related policies and also highlight the new OECD - OCDE study on the NSPA. Thanks for taking the time for the dialogue. We look forward to continuing the discussions on the EU rural and regional policies, as they are crucial for the EU to tackle the challenges ahead.

Idag hade vi på North Sweden nöjet att ta emot en grupp på 30 lärare från runt om i Sverige som besöker Bryssel på en studieresa tillsammans med EU-kommissionen i Sverige, Europaparlamentets kontor i Sverige och Universitets- och Högskolerådet genom fortbildningen “Skolambassadör för EU”. Syftet är att på skolor runtom i Sverige ha lärare med kunskap om EU som stöd för övriga lärare i undervisning om EU.   Under besöket fick gruppen träffa Mikael M Janson, direktör på North Sweden, som berättade om hur North Sweden arbetar på Brysselarenan, viktiga frågor och norra Sveriges relevans för EU, som ett exempel för hur också lokal och regional nivå påverkas av EU och engagerar sig i EU, som en del av skolambassadörernas intensiva dagar i Bryssel med besök hos EU:s olika institutioner.    Senare på eftermiddagen välkomnade vi också en delegation från LO Norra Sverige där Mikael gav en inblick i vår verksamhet och aktuella EU-frågor för norra Sverige. Vi tackar grupperna för att de ville komma förbi och träffa oss på North Sweden – norra Sveriges hem i Bryssel!

North Swedens Mikael M Janson och Gölin Gerken Christiansen träffade idag SVT Västernorrland på vårt kontor i Bryssel. Under mötet redogjorde Mikael och Gölin Carina för North Swedens arbete och lyfte viktiga frågor för norra Sverige. Mikael lyfte fram att norra Sverige är viktigt och intressant för EU, men också behöver stöd från EU för att utvecklas. Han berättade även om rapporten som OECD - OCDE tagit fram om regionerna i Northern Sparsely Populated Areas, dess betydelse för norra Sverige och vägen framåt. Carina diskuterade EU:s skogspolitik och vikten av att påverka i EU inom för våra regioner i norra Sverige viktiga frågor.    Vi tackar SVT Västernorrland för att ni kom förbi och ville ställa frågor om vårt arbete och hur beslut som fattas på EU-nivå påverkar norra Sverige!

North Swedens Lotta Rönström deltog i förra veckan på Järnvägsbranschens samverkansforum i Stockholm. Utbyggnad av järnväg är viktigare än någonsin utifrån såväl nyindustrialisering i norr som det geopolitiska läget. Nordiskt samarbete är avgörande för fortsatt utveckling av regionerna i det europeiska Arktis. Detta och mycket mer lyftes under forumet.

Green transition in northern Sweden highlighted in the European Parliament 🇪🇺 Yesterday, North Sweden European Office organised a breakfast seminar in the European Parliament, hosted by MEP Sofie Eriksson, on EU Competitiveness, the Green Industrial Transition, and the Role of Regions and Local Communities. With northern Sweden being a driver in the EU’s Green Industrial Transition, Johannes Sundelin and Frida Bergman highlighted major green investments in Norrbotten and Västernorrland and their contributions to Europe’s development and competitiveness, while emphasising the important role of EU cohesion policy to strengthen local communities' capacity to carry these large-scale investments. Matthias Schmidt-Gerdts (European Commission, DG GROW) shared key takeaways from the Competitiveness Compass and Clean Industrial Deal, along with insights on building strong business cases for industrial investments. MEP Katri Kulmuni highlighted the importance of fostering attractive societies with dynamic economic structures to attract the skills needed in the green transition and pointed to northern Finland as an example, highlighting the key role of tourism development in this effort. Following these interventions, Mikael M Janson, Director at North Sweden, moderated a panel discussion bringing together perspectives from the European Commission, European Parliament, and regional level. The discussion focused on EU competitiveness, policies supporting successful green industrial transitions, energy production as well as the opportunities and challenges in communities where the transition is taking place. To conclude the seminar, the host of the event, MEP Sofie Eriksson, stressed the need for continued EU ambition in the green transition, emphasising the vital role of regional and local communities in ensuring sustainable societal development. Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming a delegation from Företagarna | Swedish Federation of Business Owners to North Sweden's office in Brussels! Together with Elinor Jakobsson from Central Sweden European Office, and Tanja Sheikhi from Region Värmland, Mikael M Janson and Niklas Johansson from North Sweden shared insights into our work in Brussels and how our regions collaborate on common interests. The discussion focused on the conditions for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in our regions, the challenges and opportunities brought by regulatory simplifications at the EU level, and how businesses can engage in the policymaking process. The importance of including micro-enterprises in the EU dialogue to ensure that their perspectives are considered was also emphasised during the meeting. Thank you to Jonas Nordin, Joakim Sjöstedt, Petra Örjegren, Patrik Ekman, and Johan Södergren for the visit. We look forward to continued dialogue and future collaboration!
