Empowering communities to revive our planet : Join us in reforesting the future 🌱🌍

About us

Graine de Vie is a non-profit organisation created in Belgium in 2009 and Luxembourg in 2012. Our mission is to promote environmental conservation and combat deforestation in Africa through tree planting initiatives supported by local communities. We are dedicated to fostering a greener, healthier planet by planting and nurturing trees, engaging communities, and advocating for sustainable practices. Through our collaborative efforts, we aim to restore ecosystems, improve air and water quality, and enhance the quality of life for current and future generations. We do it by safeguarding local communities’ engagement in reforestation resulting in improvements of their livelihood and their commitment to preserve long term sustainability of African forests. We engage with individuals, companies and philanthropic organisations who sponsor forest protection, reforestation, and humanitarian projects in Africa. Our business model enables us to invest all donations in tree planting projects in Madagascar, Togo, Benin, Ghana, RDC and Cameroun. Our staff in Europe is made up exclusively of volunteers. In Africa, we work actively with local communities and governments involving them in our cause therefore creating large stakeholder communities to support our projects. Our organisation provides work to thousands of villagers thus helping reduce rampant poverty. Further, Graine de Vie organises on-going activities to raise awareness of hundreds of thousands of people about the need to protect and restore forests to ensure a better future for humanity.

In our efforts to manage #wildfire risks we continue to invest in creation of firewalls in the areas of our projects. Work on the firewall at the Ambohitantely special reserve was recently completed by our team with strong support from the local community. This 9.5km,15m-wide #fireline is essential to ensure containment of wildfires, limiting environmental damage and protection of human lives and property. Wildfires in African forests have become increasingly prevalent due to a combination of #climatechange, #deforestation, and human activities. Recent reports indicate that fire incidents in wet tropical forests, which historically experienced fewer fires, have doubled over the past few decades. The year 2024 saw a significant increase in wildfire activity across Africa, particularly during the August fire season, contributing to substantial ecological and atmospheric impacts. This surge has resulted in extensive #ecosystemdegradation, increased #carbonemissions, and a threat to #biodiversity. Notably, the smoke and heat generated by these fires exacerbate air quality issues and accelerate species extinction risks.

Last week we shared with you information about our initiative for anyone to #offset their lifetime emissions by planting their own forest. Here is some more depth to this initiative addressing inquires we had about it.                 𝟱𝟳𝟲𝟬 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀 = 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 2,880 euros total investment. 𝗢𝗡𝗟𝗬 𝟮𝟬 𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝘀/𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟭𝟮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 is needed from an average individual to offset your lifetime CO2 emissions. With that you will sequester 600 tonnes of CO2. The advantage of #sequestration by trees is that trees absorb the CO2 already omitted while producing oxygen. It’s an ideal solution to reduce our past, present and future impact as we await new CO2 reduction technologies to help us obtain the ideal objective of 0 CO2 emissions. By creating new tree nurseries we overcome 2 other challenges: 1. To reduce the loss of #biodiversity: Graine de View projects are adapted to each specific geographic zone. 2. To improve the livelihood of local communities most affected by the effects of our emissions: Graine de View projects create local economic activity respective of each community. #𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀. By planting trees, we can work together to achieve the ultimate objective of reducing our CO2 impact to ZERO.

It’s been a great honor to welcome Mr. Eric Jacquemin, the Belgian Ambassador in Cameroon, to the launch of Graine de Vie’s reforestation campaign in Yaoundé. The first 150 saplings were planted nearby the presidential palace by the Ambassador, Yaoundé’s major, the sub-prefect and other local supporters. The event inaugurated reforestation campaign that begins with creation of the nursery with 5,000 young trees destined to be planted in the Cameroon’s capital. #climatecrisis #reforestation #planttrees

Xavier Rouget's words echo the urgency of protecting the Congo Basin forests: "Is the last forest that stands between us and the climate apocalypse pronounced by science" In November 2023, 5 million seeds were planted. Today, 3 million trees are standing, exceeding expectations by 65%. 🌳   The “Regreening Africa with the power of permaculture” project, in partnership with FANYATU and Graine de Vie NGO, aims to combat deforestation and improve the living conditions of communities in the Congo Basin. Through permaculture, we empower the local population, fostering self-sufficiency and improving the standard of living in the Moba region.
