"It's time to prioritise mental health in the workplace" is a very fitting theme for this year's #WorldMentalHealth Day which fell on Thursday, on the same day as #WorldInclusionDay. The link between mental health and inclusion is crucial but often overlooked. Mental health refers to one's emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. It influences how we think, feel and behave, as well as how we handle stress, relate to others and make decisions. Mental health is not just the absence of mental illness, it also encompasses positive aspects such as emotional resilience, self-esteem and psychological balance. In the workplace, poor mental health ranges from decreased productivity and morale, increased absenteeism, social isolation and burnout, all of which hinder inclusivity. By addressing mental health openly, we foster truly inclusive environments where everyone feels valued. Today marks the start of #DyslexiaAwarenessWeek in the UK! With 17% of the world population being dyslexic, that's 137m million stories to tell, all with their own unique experience.️ Dyslexia is a #neurodivergent condition and a common learning difference that can impact reading, writing and spelling. Although often perceived as a limitation, it doesn't define a person's potential! In fact, many dyslexic individuals possess enhanced strengths in creativity, problem-solving and out-of-the-box thinking; demonstrating the power of diverse learning styles. In the workplace, the first step to support this #neurodivergence is to nurture the psychological safety needed so that individuals can voice their distinction. Furthermore, small adjustments can make a big difference for dyslexic individuals. This could be anything from providing clear instructions in writing, to allowing extra time for tasks or offering assistive technology such as text-to-speech software. By understanding and accommodating #dyslexia, we can unlock incredible talent and create a more inclusive environment. Whilst she may not have intended to spark a movement, her actions led to significant social changes and she left a rich legacy of resistance against racial discrimination and injustice behind. This quote highlights the power of individual actions to shape history, particularly those who persist, despite their struggles. Even when those actions are motivated by personal circumstances or appear to be only small, they can have a large and lasting impact. Yesterday was #WorldDeafDay; a day honouring the achievements of the #deafcommunity worldwide. It's a time to raise awareness about the challenges deaf people face and to emphasise the importance of sign language in creating a more inclusive society. Here are just a few of many ways that you can be inclusive of your deaf colleagues and customers: 1. Learn basic #signlanguage. Even a few signs can go a long way in making those in the deaf community feel valued. 2. Provide closed captioning or transcripts for meetings and presentations to ensure everyone can participate. 3. To maintain inclusivity and to provide maximum comfort, ensure meeting spaces have adequate lighting and clear visual access for all participants who rely heavily on visual cues. When presenting, maintain eye contact with the audience and use visual aids or written materials to support your communication and make information accessible to everyone. 4. Respect deaf individuals' preferred communication methods. Some may prefer to communicate through sign language, whilst others may prefer to lip read or use #assistivetechnology. 5. Consider hiring an interpreter for events or important meetings to maximise the comfort of those needing one. 6. Speak with someone from the community to understand the daily challenges they face and how you can support further.
