"Following the initial hype, many renewable hydrogen projects are now facing delays. While the atmosphere may have shifted, the need for renewable hydrogen to achieve our 2030 and 2050 goals remains unchanged." At an event we co-hosted yesterday with MEPs Niels Fuglsang and Hildegard Bentele, this issue took centre stage. MEP Fuglsang stressed the importance of staying the course, while MEP Bentele pointed out: “The situation has not got easier. High energy prices and low deployment of electricity grids are a major obstacle. The focus in this new term should be to speed up the deployment of renewables and renewable hydrogen in Europe.” MEPs were joined by Kitti Nyitrai from the European Commission and key players from across the value chain - renewable supplier EDP Renewables, electrolyser manufacturer Sunfire and offtaker A.P. Moller - Maersk - to discuss the industry's main challenges and how MEPs can support the sector's ramp-up. So, what should policymakers focus on in the next five-year legislative term? 1️⃣ Staying the course with the Green Deal and implement adopted legislation and targets. This will give market players the certainty they need to invest. Member States must prioritise this. 2️⃣ Unlocking demand. High taxes and levies on electricity are among the issues making renewable hydrogen costlier. Enabling offtakers to access affordable renewable electrons and molecules will be key to create lead markets. 3️⃣ Boosting resilience. Renewable hydrogen is not only key to Europe's hard-to-electrify industry and transport, it will also increase our continent’s resilience when made with homegrown renewables. More investment in our infrastructure, notably electricity grids and interconnection will be essential. A huge thank you to all our panelists and attendees. These conversations will continue at the Renewable Hydrogen Summit, now just one month away! Register here: https://lnkd.in/dtfBZFNc

On 22 October, we hosted a hybrid workshop which focused on Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) certification. During this session, expert speakers Pierre Krenn (CertifHy), Dario Formenti (ISCC - International Sustainability and Carbon Certification), and Timo Winkelmann (REDcert GmbH) provided an assessment of the latest advancements in the certification process and the implications of this for the industry. Here were some of the main takeaways from the workshop: 1️⃣ Now that production rules are adopted in EU law, certification schemes are responsible for translating those into technical requirements for companies to follow when producing RFNBOs. 2️⃣ The three schemes have passed the European Commission’s technical check. The EU must now officially approve them as soon as possible to give clarity for project developers. 3️⃣ Companies can already launch their pre-certification process, the first step to get their plant certified! A big thank you to the speakers for their detailed and insightful presentations, and to everyone who attended! RFNBO certifications are the answer to the European Union’s demand for renewable fuels and will be critical to securing the future uptake of renewable hydrogen. Get in touch with us if you’re interested in learning more about how you can help accelerate the adoption of renewable hydrogen in Europe and participate in these exclusive workshops! #RenewableHydrogen #RFNBOs #Certification
