💡 Innovative financing solutions for climate adaptation: InnoFINS session 💡 The first day of our third consortium meeting continued with the InnoFINS session led by the Universiteit Antwerpen 💼 During this session, partners discussed innovative financing instruments for supporting climate adaptation and nature-based solutions. This session began with presentations based on the research work of the Flemish Urban Living Labs and highlighted : 📊 Concept of value capture as a mechanism for financing green infrastructure. 🔄 Impact-based lending and payment for ecosystem services. 🌳 Voluntary compensation mechanisms to engage the private sector in climate resilience. 💻 Use of blockchain technology (with Internet of Things, data and Artificial Intelligence) in climate adaptation finance. The second part of the session included workshops on developing business cases and exploring the practical implementation of these financial instruments. Globale sportevenementen zoals de Olympische (Winter)Spelen leiden vaak tot de bouw van nagelnieuwe infrastructuur die vaak na afloop nauwelijks nog gebruikt worden, en vandaag nog steeds in een vervallen staat verkeren. Bekende voorbeelden zijn de Olympische dorpen van in Athene (2004) en Turijn (2010), de bobsleebaan en skischans in Sarajevo (1986), en het Media Center in Rio De Janeiro. Professor Maarten Van Acker beschrijft in een opiniestuk voor De Morgen hoe Parijs 🇫🇷 niet koos voor tijdelijke pracht en praal maar de Spelen als een hefboom heeft gebruikt voor stadsvernieuwing met een blijvende impact op de leefbaarheid. 🏅Bestaande infrastructuur werd zoveel mogelijk gebruikt, gerenoveerd en gemoderniseerd onder het motto 'minder, beter en nuttiger bouwen'. 🏅Bestaande initiatieven werden versneld uitgevoerd en nieuwe stedelijke concepten werden uitgetest. 🏅Het nieuwe olympische dorp in Saint-Denis zal na de Spelen worden omgevormd tot een gemengde woonwijk. #olympicgames #Olympics #Paris #urban #urbanrenewal #urbanregenaration #liveability

Wie zich in #Antwerpen wel eens begeeft in de #Pelikaanstraat aan het Centraal Station weet hoe chaotisch het verkeer hier kan zijn. Voetgangers en treinreizigers, fietsers, bussen, taxi's en bestelwagens en taxi's kruisen elkaar en zorgen voor gevaarlijke verkeerssituaties op drukke knooppunt. Een van de conflictpunten zijn 15 taxistandplaatsen aan de zijde van het station, naast de fietssnelweg, om reizigers van het station te bedienen. Voetgangers moeten instappen op het fietspad en vaak zijn er meer wachtende taxi’s dan het aantal beschikbare plaatsen. Masterstudenten stedenbouw en ruimtelijke planning Brecht Cuyvers, Emma H., Eva Jacobs en Wieter Van den Branden onderzochten welke ruimtelijke oplossingen voor de taxi's de leefbaarheid in de Pelikaanstraat kunnen verhogen. Hun studie werd opgepikt door het Het Laatste Nieuws (link in comment). Het is uitkijken naar de reacties van kabinet van schepen van mobiliteit Koen Kennis en de Antwerpse Provinciale Taxi Unie, die de studie zullen lezen. De belangrijkste conclusies uit hun studie: 🚕 De beste oplossing om de leefbaarheid te verhogen is het verplaatsen van de taxi's naar het Mediaplein aan de achteringang van het station. 🚕 In dit scenario kunnen de standplaatsen aan de Pelikaanstraat omgevormd worden tot een groene zone en een breder fietspad. 🚕 Een rolband in het station naar het voorbeeld in luchthavens zou reizigers snel van de achteringang naar de perrons brengen 🚕 Een integrale visie voor de stationsomgeving is noodzakelijk omdat problemen en oplossingen in relatie tot elkaar moeten worden bekeken.

📣 We are excited to welcome a new research group member and PhD researcher, Jessica De Doncker. Jessica is a spatial planner who will join a new Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland project FACILEX (FACilitating Interregional Local Energy eXchange). Her research will investigate the legal, spatial and administrative impediments to interregional cooperation in renewable energy. Through a comparative analysis of four cases within the Dutch-Flemish border area designated as renewable acceleration zones, the potentials and barriers for interregional collaboration are examined. Stakeholders are identified, and their perspectives are gathered through qualitative inquiries. Based on these findings, prerequisites for energy exchange are identified to promote interregional energy integration.
