The 1st RICH Europe Symposium, held on the 7th May 2024 at the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (Madrid), gathered experts to discuss the future of Research Infrastructures (RIs) in Europe, their role in Open Science, and their impact on the European Research Area (ERA). Here are the main conclusions: 📌 Research Infrastructures: Pillars of European Science ✅ RIs play a key role in connecting national research communities across Europe. ✅ Transnational access programs have transformed scientific collaboration at international level. ✅ RIs are fundamental for the development of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). 📌 Challenges & Opportunities in Open Science 🔹 A cultural shift is needed to fully implement Open Science at the national level. 🔹 RIs should act as validators and evaluators of EOSC solutions. 🔹 Stronger policies are required to support Diamond Open Access and reduce disparities between disciplines. 📌 Improving Access & Sustainability of RIs 🌱 There is a growing trend towards remote and hybrid access, which impacts user training, interaction, and the environmental footprint. ⚠️ Access programs remain fragmented, underfunded, and administratively complex at both national and EU levels. 💡 Innovation funding should be a priority to ensure the sustainability of RIs. 📌 The Future of European Research Infrastructures 🚀 Better coordination is needed between RIs, EOSC, and initiatives like European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (EDICs) and Technology Infrastructures (TIs). 📢 Stronger funding of RIs in needed, at national level and at European level, mainly through the 10th Framework Programme. 📊 Over 100 participants from 30 countries engaged in discussions on how to strengthen collaboration between research infrastructures, policymakers, and scientific communities. 💡 What are your thoughts on the role of Research Infrastructures in European science? 🤔💬 #OpenScience #Research #RICH_Europe #EOSC #ERA #Innovation #ResearchInfrastructures

The European Research Executive Agency (REA) efforts to valorise #EU-funded #research in support of better #policymaking continue. Our #researchinfrastructures team is exploring #synergies across European Commission programmes to identify #joint #actions in the areas of #preparedness and #resilience. How? Why? Let's see some examples. #Earthquakes, #volcanoes explosions and other #naturaldisasters are affecting more and more our community. My colleague Ioannis Andredakis explains how DT-GEO, a Digital Twin for #Geophysical extremes, could contribute to improving society's preparedness for #naturaldisasters by #forecasting their occurrences. #Climatechanges is still our priority, to give to #nextgenerations a prosperous future. The three #researchinfrastructures projects: UrbanAIR Project, WeatherGenerator and #TerraDT promise extraordinary results in favour of EU #citizens. My colleague Anna Santoro, managing UrbainAir-project, highlights the potential support to #decisionmaking in #urban areas to maximise the #health and #socioeconomic #wellbeing of its #citizens affected by #climatechanges. 👌 Yesterday, there was the launch of WeatherGenerator, for potential artificial intelligence-based weather & climate solutions. <iframe src="https://lnkd.in/dZ6hjDVX" height="1340" width="504" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" title="Embedded post"></iframe> #TerraDT kick-off meeting also took place yesterday, launching the project developing #climate modelling with a modular #digital twin of the #cryosphere and #land systems: 👉 For more info: https://lnkd.in/dJXMfYqh A huge quantity of #funding #opportunities for #researchinfrastructures under #HorizonEU and #H2020.
