About us

About the Institute The Royal Higher Institute for Defence (RHID) is the reference body or think tank of the Belgian Ministry of Defence in the field of security and defence. It is also responsible for managing the multiannual programme for scientific and technological research, including the security and defence studies, as well as the scientific research of the Royal Army and Military History Museum. In order to fully accomplish its mission, the RHID has set the objectives of focusing the attention – by identifying research and discussion topics, and themes of interest – as well as deepening and disseminating knowledge. Organizing conferences, colloquia and seminars as well as publishing papers by researchers at the Belgian Ministry of Defence, and the Institute in particular, fully contribute to knowledge transfer. The High Studies for Security and Defence, in the form of a meeting place with seminars and visits, provides training in these fields for high-level staff, both from the ministry and the civil sector. Through national and international partnerships, the RHID has developed an extensive network to exchange ideas and experiences.

The Director of DIRS, the Colonel Steven Lauwereys, is seeking information on the use of #ObjectProcessModeling (OPM - ISO 19450:2024) for developing a technology roadmap. If there are individuals with insights or real-world experiences in this field, he would like to connect and learn more about their journey.

Dear Network, If you have insights or real-world experiences with technology roadmapping using Object Process Modeling (OPM - ISO 19450:2024), I’d love to connect and learn from your journey 👉 steven.lauwereys@mil.be We at the Royal Higher Institute for Defence are exploring the use of Object Process Modeling for technology roadmapping and are eager to learn from real-world applications using this methodology. Specifically, I’m interested in hearing the good, the bad, and the remarkable about practical use cases within industry, as well as examples of successful collaborations between academia, research institutions (technology side) and industry (product side) using this approach. And for those ready to sell me the “next big thing”—hold that thought! Opportunities like that will be on the table after we’ve fully unraveled the potential benefits.

This multidisciplinary programme, organised by the Royal Higher Institute for Defence (RHID) in partnership with the EGMONT - Royal Institute for International Relations, brings together 30 auditors selected among senior officers and civilian executives from various security and defence-related sectors. 👩✈️👨💼 🎯 The themes addressed during this second session 2024-2025 are crucial: - Bart Asnot (Microsoft) opened the seminar with a presentation on the possibilities of #artificialintelligence and the threats it poses, a subject that is unavoidable for the modern defence sector. 💻 - Dr Joseph Henrotin (CAPRI and ISC Paris) delved into the military aspect of AI, putting its applications in future conflicts into perspective. 🤖 - Ine Van Wymersch, National Drugs Commissioner and alumna of the 2023-24 HSSD season, discussed the fight against crime and drug trafficking, which are major security issues for the future. 🚔 - Jean-Pascal van Ypersele (UCLouvain - Université catholique de Louvain) proposed a reflection on the impact of climate change on #geopolitics and #internationalsecurity. On Saturday 19 October, the day began with an analysis by Major Luk Sanders (RHID) on the state of global democracy 🗳️, followed by a panel discussion on political #extremism and relations with autocratic regimes. Finally, Bruno Masquelier (UCL) closed the seminar by explaining the importance of demography in contemporary geopolitics. 👥 🤝 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐒𝐒𝐃, 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧. The moments of sharing and discussion enabled participants to forge lasting bonds and enrich their strategic perspectives.
