Many universities and research institutions have expressed reservations about the European Commission's proposal to include dual-use research projects in FP10, the successor to Horizon Europe, set to begin in 2028. As defence concerns grow following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Commission has proposed expanding FP10 to include both civilian and military projects. However, most academic organisations prefer to maintain the current separation between civilian and defence research, fearing the impact on global collaboration and civil funding. While businesses show more openness to the idea, the proposal remains a point of contention. 🔎 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/ecQGDJv2

A historic step for animal welfare: the rabbit pyrogen test (RPT) will no longer be required in the European Pharmacopoeia starting in 2025. 🔬 The IMI project VAC2VAC played a crucial role in validating non-animal alternatives like the monocyte activation test (MAT), which has proven to detect contaminants in medicines reliably. 🧪 This landmark decision paves the way for more ethical testing methods and highlights the power of collaboration between academic, industrial, and regulatory partners—together setting a new standard for medicine safety. ➡️Read more in this article from Innovative Health Initiative (IHI): https://lnkd.in/d75eSKkk #AnimalWelfare #PharmaceuticalInnovation #NonAnimalTesting #MedicineSafety #InnovationInHealth

A Science|Business long read: what if affordable solar power had become a reality much earlier? Reflecting on the history of #photovoltaics goes beyond hindsight - it is a crucial lesson for today's policymakers. Science|Business has delved into the history of #SolarPower to uncover key missed opportunities in the technology’s development, which if addressed earlier, could have accelerated our progress towards a more sustainable future. Policymakers knew as early as the 1970s that with enough investment, solar could be rapidly scaled up to become competitive with fossil fuels – but the world failed to act fast enough. As the #climate crisis intensifies and the demand for #RenewableEnergy solutions escalates, the challenges and delays of the past underscore the urgent need to rapidly scale up promising technologies, drive down costs and improve our #data collection on the performance of emerging innovations. Our article examines how earlier #investments and better strategic decisions could have transformed the solar market, reduced reliance on #FossilFuels, and mitigated some of the #climate impacts we face today. Drawing on extensive #research and interviews, it explores the implications of these historical lessons for current #energy strategies and future #policy development. The distribution of European Innovation Council (#EIC) grants reveals disparities, with Western Europe and the Nordic countries consistently dominating in EU #research #funding. The European Innovation Scoreboard (#EIS) divides EU member states into four categories: innovation leaders, strong innovators, moderate innovators, and emerging innovators. Since its launch in 2021, the EIC has allocated €1.1 billion funds to institutions in countries falling into the strong innovator category, while emerging innovators received only €87 million. In 2023, the EIC board announced its commitment to "enhancing the involvement of high-potential innovators from #Widening countries." 📌 More: https://lnkd.in/e_3ep2EG
