  • How can we achieve gender equality in science? On 28th February, to mark the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Girls and Women in Science, and #IWD2025 organised an online discussion on the role of women in science, looking at what has already been achieved to include equity, diversity and inclusion in research systems and the challenges that still persist. 🔹 What are the systemic barriers which still limit women's full participation in research? 🔹 How do factors like social background, ethnicity, and disability influence career progression? 🔹 How can research funding and performing organisations create a more inclusive and supportive environment for women in research? Watch the discussion with contributions from Marcela Linkova, M. Carmen Mayoral Gastón and Jo O'Leary on initiatives which aim to increase equite, diversity and inclusion in research and the changes needed to drive lasting impact. 📺 Watch here: bit.ly/3XDBY1p #AccelerateAction #InternationalWomensDay #InternationalDayofWomenandGirlsinScience

On International Women's Day, Science Europe reaffirms its commitment to advancing equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the European research ecosystem as an essential part of research quality. We aim to promote a research ecosystem where all scholars can realise their potential regardless of gender, sexual orientation, religion, disabilities, ethnic origin, or social background. Women and minority groups, however, continue to face barriers, biases, discrimination, and violence both in academia and society at large. We must act decisively to combat inequalities and promote a European science that is respectful and inclusive of all people. Science Europe calls for action on several essential aspects that require international cooperation to implement: 🔹 Systematising the integration of the EDI dimension in research content. 🔹 Stepping up action to combat gender-based violence and sexual misconduct in academia. 🔹 Addressing persistent inequalities. 🔹 Ensuring adequate funding for research on gender, sex, race and ethnicity, migration, and inequality and discrimination. The sharp decline in academic freedom and the rise of far-right movements targeting women and minorities demand urgent action. Science Europe will continue to develop relevant actions and activities, and advocate that these points are included in a strong and inclusive future Framework Programme. • Science Europe is pleased to contribute to the policy roundtable on careers in research. 🎙️ James Morris is presenting key actions research funding and performing organisations are pursuing to address some of the biggest challenges for those in research careers: ➡️ Precarity and overcompetition ➡️ Lack of recognition for a range of skills ➡️ Building connections with reforms in research assessment and CoARA We are exploring solutions such as minimum standards for careers, integrated career development support, and fostering a European Research Area where varied and flexible research careers thrive. 🌍 It's crucial to create an environment that empowers individuals, values their diverse skills, and supports knowledge advancement, research quality, and broader impacts for society. #ResearchCareers

Science Europe welcomed the opportunity for our Secretary General Lidia Borrell-Damian, on the invitation of CNRS, to take part in the workshop of the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research (IFCPAR/CEFIPRA) this week in New Delhi at the CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research. It was a pleasure to contribute to discussions on #openscience, sharing updates on the launch of the European Diamond Capacity Hub and other recent developments, as well as on the work of CoARA - Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment, highlighting how reform of #researchassessment and open science initiatives can work together to promote research quality, diversity, and impact for all our benefit.

    Driving progress in R&I policy-making

🔎 What do we know about the opportunities and challenges of AI for open science? This week, Science Europe hosted a webinar to explore the relationship between #ArtificialIntelligence and #OpenScience. It was an opportunity for our members to reflect on AI’s role in research. My key takeaways from the discussion: ✅ AI is a double-edged sword for open science. AI can enhance meaningful access to scholarly knowledge, but it also raises concerns about misinformation, disinformation, and issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. ✅ The need for a two-way street between AI and open science. To improve AI’s benefits while mitigating its risks, it will be important to apply open science principles to AI development and governance. ✅ The need for active engagement by public research organisations. Universities, research institutions, funders, libraries, learned societies, and infrastructures must actively engage in shaping AI policies. However, AI advancements are largely driven by private companies, often outside Europe, creating challenges for meaningful public-sector participation. ✅ EU policymakers are taking action. From living guidelines to draft Council Conclusions and proposals for an AI Research Council, there is growing momentum in shaping AI’s role in research. Research organisations should actively contribute to these discussions, which they can do via the European Research Area Forum. ✅ The broader geopolitical context matters. AI in research is intertwined with global #Competitiveness and #KnowledgeSecurity. A balanced approach is needed to ensure strategic considerations align with international research collaboration. A special thanks to my colleague Theodora Famprikezi (Science Europe) for presenting her work on AI in research, and to Tony Ross-Hellauer (Know Center & Graz University of Technology), Serge Horbach (Radboud University), Mohammad Hosseini (Northwestern University), and Kristi Holmes (Northwestern University) for their excellent insights. Their article on AI and open science is a must-read: https://lnkd.in/eRu7FnaG This discussion is far from over! Science Europe will continue to explore these issues through the Working Group on Open Science and a new Working Group on AI. #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #OpenScience #OpenAccess #EuropeanResearchArea #ERA #KnowledgeSecurity #ResearchSecurity #EUPolicy #Research

🌍 The 4th United Nations Open Science and Open Scholarship Conference is happening on 16-18 October 2025 in Tokyo, Japan! This year, we’re putting a spotlight on #DiamondOpenAccess and other community-owned and community-led scholarly publishing models. Building on the insights from the Global Summits in Toluca (2023) and Cape Town (2024), Science Europe will contribute key lessons from this growing global movement. Other major conference themes include: artificial intelligence, and science communication. I’m thrilled to be part of the programme committee for this event! Working with Thanos Giannakopoulos and Megs Wacha has been a real pleasure, and I look forward to bringing the voices of the global Diamond OA community to a broader audience. ⏰ Stay updated and sign up here: https://lnkd.in/e454VYcY #UnitedNations #OpenScience #ScholarlyPublishing #DiamondOA #OpenAccess #ArtificialIntelligence #ScienceCommunication #Research

Congratulations to Science Europe member CSIC for being recognised as an EU Gender Equality Champion! Equality, diversity, and inclusion are essential components of scientific quality, crucial for driving excellence in research and innovation as well as wider societal progress. We applaud CSIC and the other awardees for their commitment and well-deserved recognition!

🏆 Meet the 2024 EU #GenderEqualityChampions! These institutions are leading the way toward a more inclusive and fair research and academic world, proving that gender equality is not just a goal - it’s a necessity for excellence in science and innovation. In Research and Innovation (R&I), diverse teams drive better ideas, stronger collaborations, and breakthrough discoveries. But despite progress, men remain overrepresented in leadership positions, and gender biases persist in funding, publishing, and career progression. That’s why initiatives like the Gender Equality Plan requirement in #HorizonEU are crucial as they ensure that institutions actively work towards structural change. The EU Gender Equality Champions Award recognises institutions that go beyond compliance, embedding gender equality into their DNA and setting new standards for academia and research. Let’s celebrate their achievements and push for even greater impact! 👉 europa.eu/!f9Y8JN Eloisa del Pino CSIC PAWEŁ ANTONOWICZ University of Gdansk Instruct-ERIC Liz Hughes Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI)
