Yesterday, I had an opportunity to share my patient story at the 'Empowering voices: addressing the needs of AYA's' symposium organised by the Cancer Centre of the Belgium Public Health institute Sciensano. Belgium has world class healthcare (and I'm grateful to have been treated at UZ Gent), but the specific profile of AYA's (young people with cancer) unfortunatelly often leads to a delayed diagnosis. We feel extremely lonely and sometimes misunderstood during our treatment and we face specific challenges (physical and psychological) in our post treatment revalidation. Discussions like these, and Belgium recent AYA cancer plan, can hopefully help adressing these challenges Thanks you Fabienne Van Aelst for the invitation and facilitating this interesting exchange.

De resultaten van het ‘B@seball’-onderzoek(Hoe biodiversiteit bijdraagt aan het welzijn en de immuniteit van kindere), waarbij we de afgelopen vier jaar actief betrokken waren, nu beschikbaar zijn. In Vienna for the closing event of the multicountry project "EU Health Resources Hub for sustainable investing in health" supported by the European Commission under the #TechnicalSupportInstrument! This International Symposium on Recent Advances in Food Analysis focuses on the latest trends and advancements in food analysis, bringing together experts from around the world 🌍. Our team was present: 🔹 Mélanie Di Mario presented her latest results on migratable substances from paper and board food contact materials (FCMs). 🔹 Lisa Siciliani showcased a poster on the analysis of nanoparticles in FCMs and another on the characterization of nanoparticles in the food additive E172. 🔹 Daniela Montalvo shared her poster about advanced techniques for extracting silicon dioxide. Aujourd'hui j'ai été invitée en tant que speaker au symposium #AYA organisé par Sciensano, que je souhaite remercier pour cette opportunité. "Empowering voices: adressing the specific needs of Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer". 🎗️ Pendant 30 minutes j'ai eu le plaisir et l'opportunité de présenter, de façon pédagogique, mon parcours et mes défis en tant qu'ancienne patiente AYA et de les croiser avec le vécu de quelques patients de mon association Action Lymphome Wallonie-Bruxelles, en y ajoutant également mes connaissances dans ce domaine (AYA) et celui de la promotion de la santé, devant un public international aux différents profils. Cela a été l'occasion pour moi de souligner aussi le rôle de la première ligne de soin dans la prise en charge/accompagnement des patients AYA et de suggérer quelques recommandations-pistes de réflexion. Mon parcours de reconstruction/reconversion professionnelle axé sur le domaine de la santé - même si long et difficile - ainsi que mes différentes études (universitaires et non) ayant légitimité mon parcours de patient, me permettent d'avoir aujourd'hui différentes casquettes et ce sont justement ces différentes casquettes que je porte qui contribuent à donner pleinement du sens à l'épreuve la plus difficile que j'ai vécue dans ma vie: le cancer. De plus, avoir croisé à ce congrès l'une des premières médecins qui m'accueillie à l'hôpital il y a 8 ans, ce fût une émotion que je ne peux pas vraiment décrire avec mes mots. A large Belgian consortium, led by the brilliant Ioannis Passaris of Sciensano, has been tracking non-invasive Pneumococcal infections since 2020. Today, we report on >1,000 cases in Eurosurveillance, showing that (1) current vaccines only protect against 25% of S. pneumoniae strains causing respiratory infections, (2) strong serotype diversity between invasive and non-invasive strains, and (3) #AMR levels among non-invasive strains are markedly higher. The general trends for #chlamydia, #gonorrhoea and #syphilis in #Belgium have been rising for several years, with a temporary drop in 2020. 📈 🔹 The most frequently diagnosed #STI in Belgium in 2023 is chlamydia, mainly in young women. However, the increase in the number of chlamydia diagnoses in recent years has been more pronounced among men. 🔹 Gonorrhoea was the second most frequently reported STI in 2023. The number of gonorrhoea diagnoses was almost five times higher in men than in women. Nevertheless, we see a doubling of cases in the past 2 years for both men and women. 🔹 Syphilis was the least common STI in 2023 and continues to affect mainly men.
