🏁 Belgian experts are ready to continue tackling the challenges of radioactive waste management at the European level 🏁 🔎 EURAD, the European Joint programme on radioactive waste management funded by #EURATOM, organized the kick-off meeting of the second leg of the project in Ghent this week. In EURAD-2, the focus is put on both geological disposal and the further optimization of surface disposal facilities, combining the goals of PREDIS (EU-project on Pre-disposal Management of Radioactive Waste) and EURAD-1 (on research topics related to geological disposal). EURAD-2 has a more strategic orientation, with 6 of the 18 work packages being strategic studies running for 2 years. The R&D studies will again run for 5 years. EURAD-2 is aiming to screen the status specific topics and the needs from different countries to either conclude elements of the research or prepare topics for more in-depth study. 🤝 Belgium, with more than 40 years of experience in deep geological disposal RD&D, remains a powerful voice at the European level. Belgian involvement can be found in 17 of the 18 work packages, which is truly impressive. We expect to learn a great deal from this project for our Belgian programme but also to contribute to the work thanks to our expertise and decades-long experience. #nuclearlifecycle #waste #disposal #research #Belgium

Reusing NORM waste to produce paper, cement and batteries - we are working on it! ☢️♻️ 🤝 Together with the FIC Fighters team, we aim to transform phosphogypsum waste into valuable materials for reuse in consumer products. SCK CEN will take on the radiological characterization of both the production site and the final recovered end-products. 🔬 Moreover, we will also assist with scientific studies and communication to inform the public about the benefits and safety of phosphogypsum recycling. 💬 Talk about multidisciplinarity and sustainability! 💪 Read more on our website: https://lnkd.in/evcv5Bnk #nuclearlifecycle #recycling #NORM #FICFighters #innovation #teamwork

Exciting results about terbium-161 and its potential in cancer treatment were shared by Kaat Spoormans during her presentation at #EANM 2024, recognized as one of the must-see sessions of the event! 💡 Terbium-161 has a unique property: when it decays, it emits both internal conversion and low-energy Auger electrons next to a beta particle. ☢️ Like alpha particles, these electrons travel very short distances, allowing a higher dose to accumulate locally near cancer cells with each injection. In theory, this results in a stronger therapeutic effect while sparing healthy tissue. 💬 "Our research shows that the internal conversion electrons emitted by Terbium-161 indeed deliver a significantly higher absorbed dose compared to Lutetium-177. However, to truly enhance the biological effectiveness of 161Tb, the Auger electrons must be precisely targeted at radiosensitive areas of the cell – such as the cell nucleus, the mitochondria or the cell membrane. While 161Tb-DOTATATE internalises into the cell cytoplasm, 161Tb-DOTA-LM3 binds to the cell membrane, allowing for a more focused and enhanced therapeutic effect," Kaat Spoormans explained. These insights are a significant step forward in precision cancer treatment. 🎯 Take away – European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM). Missed the session at EANM '24?
