You might have heard about a trial beginning today. Marine le Pen and France’s National Rally Party stand accused of the alleged embezzlement of European Parliament funds. It’s a high-profile case. But the misuse of European Parliament funds is hardly unique. We’ve long criticised the EU Parliament’s weak allowance system. And in fact, Follow the Money EU did a comprehensive deep dive and found that the European Parliament hasn’t been taking fraud risks seriously: https://lnkd.in/ga2h88aP When these cases happen, the European Parliament often fails to take a closer look to check whether these cases of allowance misuse are intentionally fraudulent. Instead, it just wants the money back. But the consequences for stealing a car aren’t just giving the car back. The consequences are meant to deter you from stealing again. Why can’t the European Parliament do this? The European Parliament needs to bring about real, structural, anti-corruption reforms, including: 💶better management of all allowances 🧾more transparency on how MEPs are spending public money 📂referring more cases to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office 🛡️implementing much better protection for the whistleblowers who disclose these cases #transparencyinternational #fraud #corruption #europeanparliament
Polls suggest French far-right leader Marine Le Pen is closer than ever to winning the presidency. But a trial that began today could upend her political future. Here's more: https://trib.al/MXWXOHr

🔥PIPELINES OF POWER🔥 How much access to the European Commission do the largest fossil fuel companies enjoy? We've had a look. We found: 💼A powerful network: over 50 declared organisations, more than 1000 meetings and a budget of almost 64 million euros 🌍Green Deal targeting: while oil giants are scaling back CO2 emissions targets, two thirds of these meetings concern Green Deal policy areas 👥 Boardroom influence: executives of the seven biggest oil companies sit on 16 out of the 45 boards of their associated Brussels-based networks, potentially shaping lobbying operations in 35% of these organisations. 🌐The COP28 factor: over a third of the networks and business associations, of which at least one of the biggest seven oil companies were members, attended the COP28. Our report reveals the vast scope of the fossil fuel industry's access to EU climate decision-making, not just via direct meetings, but also via the intricate web of networks and board memberships that amplify their lobbying efforts. 🔍We think citizens should be able to see whether decisions to water down climate policies are the results of fossil fuel’s extensive access and networks. That's why we need full lobby transparency now. Check out our full report: https://lnkd.in/etCYFDTR #transparencyinternational #lobbying #fossilfuel

⚠️NEW INVESTIGATIONS⚠️ TWO new bombshell reports (ours, along with Friends of the Earth Europe's) take a deep dive into the fossil fuel industry's level of access to the European Commission. There's no better time to take a look at what the soon-to-be-past EU Commission and fossil fuel industry have been up to between 2019 and 2024. Just some of the lowlights: 🕴 hundreds of meetings between fossil fuel influencers and decision makers 💸 millions spent on lobbying for things like hydrogen 🔨 the industry uses many tools including regular meetings with the EU-Commission, revolving doors and forming "industry expert" groups. The two reports paint a frightening picture of how EU climate policy gets stuck in the fossil fuel industry’s chokehold. EU policymakers must—if not for the sake of the planet, then for the citizens to whom they are accountable—demonstrate that they take their democratic mandates seriously and act upon the needs and interests of the citizens that elected them, not Big Oil’s unaccountable lobby. 🔄What’s a revolving door? It’s when a politician takes up their job immediately after leaving a lobby organisation, or goes to a lobby organisation immediately after their mandate ends. 🚪 You can see why this might cause concern. Revolving doors jeopardise political integrity because they force us to question in exactly whose interests politicians are working- citizens', or their future employers'? Revolving door rules at the European Parliament are essentially toothless. Our policy officer for EU Political Integrity, Shari Hinds, spoke to Euronews about the problem. ⬇️

Today, our own Roland Papp spoke at our Hungarian chapter Transparency International Magyarország | TI Hungary's launch event of their new report on private equity funds in Hungary. 💰Did you know that these funds control wealth equivalent to 3% of Hungary's GDP? In Hungary, private equity funds have become a vehicle to hide wealth and channel public money into private pockets, often with obscured ownership. Concealing the beneficial owners of funds provides a breeding ground for corruption and money laundering. Because of this, Hungary is now subject to an EU infringement procedure. Hungary must urgently keep a complete record of these funds' beneficial owners, in line with EU rules. Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/e5akVAe3

🚨NEW: the European Court of Justice has found that the European Parliament failed to protect a whistleblower from retaliation. Did you know the European Parliament's own whistleblowing rules don't even live up to the EU's own Whistleblower Directive? Corruption thrives when those who experience it are too afraid to speak up. The European Parliament cannot keep failing its staff in this way, and must finally see this ruling as the catalyst it needs to upgrade its rules to protect whistleblowers. Safe whistleblowers mean better politics for all of us.🛡️🔐 Full press release: https://lnkd.in/epsHHsu2 #whistleblowing #euparliament
