“Choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” – Confucius I’m happy and thankful to be a fulltime researcher/teacher again from mid November. Being a researcher and doing research related to education for sustainable development (in business economics education), transformative learning for sustainability and co-creation was apparently more than just a job for me. I’m looking forward to work together (again) with Prof. dr. Tom Kuppens, Prof. dr. Katrien Van Poeck, Dr. Pernilla Andersson, Dr. Lina Isacs, Prof. dr. Leif Ostman and Prof dr. Johan Öhman on the different projects we will conduct together. Thank you for the opportunity to go on adventure together! This also means that I need to say goodbye to my job as ‘stafmedewerker onderwijsprojecten’ in which I was responsible, together with an incredible team, for all the administration related to master thesises and internships. Thank you for all your help and trust to the many colleagues I had. A special thank you to Liesbeth Celis for your guidance and patience, Marleen Cupers and Marijke Verstegen for all your help. But first things first, a short holiday, to start well rested a new adventure 😎 UHasselt, UHasselt Research on Innovative and Society-engaged Education (U-RISE), Faculteit Bedrijfseconomische Wetenschappen UHasselt, Universiteit Gent

#inclusiefonderwijs #onderwijsinnovatie #7tintengrijs #leerondersteuning #onderwijsprofessionals Speciale dank aan Katrien Hermans en Liesbet Saenen UHasselt Research on Innovative and Society-engaged Education (U-RISE) Lorentia Veppi

Last Wednesday it was our first session of the lesson design workshop together with Uppsala University and teachers in secondary education to co-create educational material to stimulate teaching and learning for an 'embedded economy'. It was an inspiring session with motivated teachers full of Dougnuts and lesson material of Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL). Looking forward to the next session. 🌟 Celebrating 20 Years and the start of my Associate Professorship at UHasselt! 🌟 🚀 On July 16, 2004, I embarked on my academic journey at Hasselt University, starting as a gender researcher at SEIN. However, as a child I always wanted to become a teacher. That dream evolved over time, leading me to aspire to be a university professor, driven by my love for learning. ☘️ Therefore, in 2006, I transitioned to the Centre for Environmental Sciences (CMK) to pursue a PhD, focusing on the techno-economic feasibility of phytoremediation (soil reclamation using plants) for the cadmium pollution in my hometown, Lommel. I like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Jaco Vangronsveld, who recently became emeritus professor, and whose foundational work was pivotal in my academic journey. 🎓 After achieving my PhD in Environmental Economics in 2012, I ventured into educational research, blending my passion for learning and sustainability with my business engineering background. In 2019, this resulted in the start of my tenure track as an Assistant Professor in Teaching Methodology of Economics and Sustainability within the Faculteit Bedrijfseconomische Wetenschappen UHasselt and the research group UHasselt Research on Innovative and Society-engaged Education (U-RISE). 🧡 Today, October 16, 2024, marks a new chapter as I step into the role of Associate Professor at UHasselt. I am thrilled to continue exploring the intersection of sustainability and business economics education, having successfully guided the first PhD in this domain and contributed to the academic community. I am deeply grateful for the trust and support from Hasselt University (my alma mater), Vrije Universiteit Brussel (my alma pater), the COPERNICUS Alliance - European Network on Higher Education for Sustainable Development, werecircle, and all my project partners. 🚂 Thank you for being part of this incredible journey (see impressions below). Here’s to many more milestones ahead!

I’m thrilled to announce that tomorrow morning, I’ll be presenting at the ECER conference in Cyprus! 🌍 My session will focus on one of my deepest passions: inclusive education. But this time, I’m taking it a step further by exploring inclusive participatory methods, with photovoice as an example. And to add another crucial layer, I'll delve into the concept of data equity within these frameworks. Imagine achieving true equity in participatory educational research—this is the vision I’ll be discussing as part of a symposium on the how, what, and why of conducting inclusive research with Tisja Korthals Altes & T. Martijn Willemse, Ph.D. 🎓 UHasselt Research on Innovative and Society-engaged Education (U-RISE) Windesheim Special thanks to Nicky Daniels as my co-author. With pleasure I share my recent article published at Gender and Education, with a critical analysis of more than 1000 university brochures photographs from all Flemish-speaking universities in Belgium, in co-authorship with Sarah Doumen, Elke Emmers and Katrien STRUYVEN Also many thanks for the support of VPJ Sambhavi We hope this work can shed some light on how exclusionary mechanisms persist in education through cognitive schemas, helping to find ways of disrupting them and advance research in diversity and inclusion. Abstract: Despite efforts towards diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education, systemic oppression persists. This study reflects on how initiatives intended to foster inclusion interact with existing exclusionary mechanisms, impeding progress in equity projects. Specifically, we investigate the visual representation of diversity as an inclusion initiative and explore how the new diversity discourse is assimilated into established organizational cultures through intersectional cognitive schemas that help reproduce class, gender, race and ableist relations. Using a gendered lens to analyse university brochure photographs from five universities in Belgium, we identify the distribution of embodied dominant expressions of masculinity and femininity among white and non-white individuals across different professions. Our findings reveal a hierarchy of inclusion based on intersectional cognitive schemas that place non-white individuals under white women and those under white men. These schemas include meritocratic beliefs regarding the required capacities for each profession, with non-white women emerging as the most disadvantaged. The findings suggest that diversity and inclusion initiatives require critical re-evaluation, taking into account the intersectional and systemic nature of oppression.
