🕊️ Today is the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists! 🤝🏽 Let’s stand together to protect those journalists who speak out and share vital stories by ensuring that crimes don’t go unpunished. ❗ We should strengthen efforts to increase awareness of the existence and availability of victim-centric support services for journalist victims. This includes providing all relevant information, access to legal aid, psychological first aid, medical treatment and emotional support for victims and their families. 📢 To commemorate this day, UNESCO and the African Union will hold an event on November 6th and 7th with the theme 'Safety of Journalists in Crises and Emergencies'. ⚖️ Happy European Day of Justice and may all victims of injustice find their path forward to fairness and resilience! 📈 In the EU, it is estimated that about 75 million people fall victim to crime annually. The journey of a victim from crime to a fully healthy life is hampered by lack of access to correct information, lack of support through legal and psychological aid, as well as lack of trustworthy legal systems. Victim Support Europe aims to improve legislative conditions for victims of crime through an in-depth revision of the Victims' Rights Directive, that shall provide legislative solutions for the basic needs of victims. ❗In view of the upcoming trilogues for this legislative file, and on the occasion of the European Day of Justice, we urge lawmakers and institutional stakeholders to enact robust amendments for protecting all victims of all crimes. 🌍 On this United Nations Day, Victim Support Europe cherishes the 79 years of relentless work for international peace, multilateralism and human rights that the international organisation has kept undertaking. 🫱🏻🫲🏽 Over time, VSE has closely cooperated with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the United Nations Office of Counter Terrorism, and it has played an active role in the development of the UN Model Legislative Provisions To Support The Needs And Protect The Rights Of Victims Of Terrorism. VSE has also supported the revision of the UN’s manual on the Implementation of the Basic Principles of Justice for Victims of Crime and Abuse of Power. We look up to the universal standards of the UN, such as the Declaration of Basic Principles of Justice for Victims of Crime and Abuse of Power, as guidelines that we use in our everyday advocacy work for all victims of all crimes. 🎉 Happy United Nations Day to all UN staff, sympathisers and people who carry UN values and aspirations all over the world!
