🚀 𝚁𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚌𝚑 𝚂𝚑𝚘𝚠𝚌𝚊𝚜𝚎 🔬 Bridging Quantum Chemistry & Quantum Physics Through HPC! 🚀 In the latest research by a team from Ghent University and the BCMATERIALS, BASQUE CENTER FOR MATERIALS, APPLICATIONS AND NANOSTRUCTURES, a groundbreaking approach—Bloch Orbital Expansion—provides new insights into the fuzzy band structure of quantum dots. 💡 Key Findings: ✅ Quantum dot orbitals can be classified—some match bulk semiconductor band structures, while others are surface-dominated states. ✅ Surface effects are critical—seemingly perfect quantum dots don’t always emit well-defined colors unless properly passivated. ✅ HPC simulations are essential—allowing researchers to screen quantum dot geometries and predict their electronic properties. ✅ Cadmium-free materials are the future—this method helps in designing eco-friendly quantum dots for displays and lighting. 📌 Why does this matter? 🌞 Space weather forecasting at its finest! 🚀 Professor Stefaan Poedts, a long-time VSC user, continues to push the boundaries of plasma-astrophysics using our supercomputing facilities. His research on coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is crucial for understanding and predicting solar storms that can impact Earth's technology and infrastructure. ⚡🌍 🔬 We’re proud that VSC's HPC expertise plays a key role in supporting his computational modeling, helping to refine predictions and ensure timely warnings. Professor Stefaan Poedts (KU Leuven) focust zich met zijn onderzoeksgroep op 'ruimteweer'. Hij monitort CME's (Coronale massa ejecties) waarbij de zon magnetisch geladen deeltjes plasma uitstoot richting de aarde. Om deze geomagnetische stormen accuraat te voorspellen en om snelle veiligheidsaanbevelingen de deur uit te sturen, maakt men gebruik van supercomputers die binnen de 24u de nodige calculaties kunnen uitvoeren.
