Yesterday, YERUN reacted to Commissioner-designate Ekaterina Zaharieva’s European Parliament hearing, where she outlined priorities for strengthening #research and #innovation (R&I) across #Europe. Zaharieva’s five key focuses—improving the European Research Area (#ERA), fostering the #startup ecosystem, investing in key technologies, promoting #genderequality, and securing a robust #budget — strongly align with YERUN’s mission and objectives. YERUN’s response reinforces the importance of coordinated investment to meet the 3% GDP R&I funding target, urges streamlined bureaucratic procedures for #HorizonEurope, and emphasise the need for dedicated support to universities outside of alliances, particularly for balanced regional growth. Additionally, YERUN values Zaharieva’s commitment to the integration of Social Sciences and Humanities (#SSH) as essential to tackling complex societal issues alongside technological advancements. We remain committed to engaging with the Commissioner-designate and looking forward, we call for further clarity on:  🔸 Concrete budget commitments for Horizon Europe and the next FP;  🔸A robust implementation of the fifth freedom, enabling synergies between R&I and education and recognising the essential role of universities;  🔸Concrete actions to improve R&I career attractiveness and retain talent within Europe;  🔸Address the progress on the initiative on the Reform of Research Assessment and CoARA.  A renewed, strengthened ERA with #universities at its core is essential for Europe’s R&I, #welfare, and #competitiveness. YERUN is pleased to see her vision resonate with our priorities, centered around five main objectives: 🔹Strengthening the European Research Area (ERA) 🔹Enhancing the Startup Ecosystem 🔹Boosting R&I Capacities with a Focus on Key Technologies 🔹Promoting Gender Equality in R&I 🔹Securing an Ambitious Budget for the Framework Programme 🔍 𝐘𝐄𝐑𝐔𝐍’𝐬 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬: 🔺 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Zaharieva’s call for increased R&I investment, targeting 3% of GDP, aligns with YERUN's advocacy for more robust financial support. Her pragmatic approach to funding, drawing on US and Chinese models, and balanced support for dual-use research are welcome developments for enhancing Europe’s R&I landscape. 🔺𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬: The proposal for a two-phase Horizon Europe application process is promising. While YERUN supports simplification, we stress the importance of careful stakeholder consultation to mitigate potential challenges such as higher application volumes. 🔺𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧: Zaharieva's focus on university alliances as a tool for research capacity and addressing regional brain drain is encouraging. YERUN calls for additional support for universities outside alliances to ensure balanced knowledge creation and innovation beyond competitive rankings. 🔺𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 (𝐒𝐒𝐇) 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:We appreciate the recognition of SSH as essential for addressing complex societal challenges, ensuring a comprehensive approach alongside investments in key technologies. 📢 As YERUN, we are dedicated to engaging with Zaharieva to ensure the voices of young European research universities are represented. 📣 YERUN welcomes the European Commission’s recent Communication on the European Research Area (#ERA) and its commitment to advancing the ERA’s core principles. 🇪🇺 However, YERUN stresses that the ERA’s success relies on the effective implementation of remaining measures, particularly in ensuring cohesive coordination among Member States. YERUN calls for a clear, focused ERA Policy Agenda that fully recognises #universities as essential #hubs of #knowledge and #innovation. In our final session, we were joined by Sivasegaram, Policy Officer at the European Commission - European Innovation Council (EIC). 📣 In our second session of the YERUN Policy Platform, we welcomed Thierry Devars, Policy Officer at the European Commission - Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Unit. We delved into the impact and future of the #MSCA, discussing the review of the programme launched by the Commission, and key recommendations for the programme’s development. Our conversation also covered a range of focal areas, including Doctoral Networks, Postdoc Fellowships, Staff Exchanges, and the co-funding mechanisms that support both doctoral and postdoctoral programmes. A big thank you to Thierry Devars for a truly stimulating discussion! 🤝
