🏭How do the economic and legal complexities of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) impact its implementation, and how can these challenges be addressed? As designated commissioner in the hearing for the European Parliament, Wopke Hoekstra described the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) as the "crown jewel" and "working horse" of EU climate policies. While its market-based design is highly praised, the ETS faces significant challenges in its application, including enforcement issues and litigation trends. Watch Marjan Peter’s lecture recording to explore the evolution of the ETS, its role in achieving climate neutrality, and the need for greater civil society oversight to ensure trustworthiness in emissions reporting. The Jean Monnet Network GreenDeal-NET addresses the complex set of interlocking challenges related to sustainability.
About us
The Jean Monnet Network - The European Green Deal: Governing the EU’s Transition towards Climate Neutrality and Sustainability (GreenDeal-NET) – addresses the complex set of interlocking challenges in governance, policy, and law related to sustainability and climate neutrality which the European Green Deal brings to the fore. The network provides and enhances knowledge resources on the governance of the EU’s fair and effective climate and sustainability transition under the European Green Deal. It is designed to foster collaboration on new teaching, research and debating activities among the Network partners and the broader scholarly community in the field. We invite both institutions and individual experts to join us in driving the transition to a more sustainable future. GreenDeal-NET, coordinated by the Centre for Environment, Economy and Energy, is a collaboration network of 12 core European universities, expanding to become a much broader European and global network of key players active in the field of EU/European governance of the climate and sustainability transition. GreenDeal-NET builds on previous successful networking projects, including the COST Action on Innovations in Climate Governance (INOGOV www.inogov.eu), as well as the Jean Monnet Network on “Governing the EU’s Climate and Energy Transition in Turbulent Times” (GOVTRAN www.govtran.eu).

How might shifting global energy landscapes impact the political use of energy resources in the future? 🔌 From the 1973 Oil Shock to the 2022 European Energy Crisis, energy disruptions have profoundly impacted international relations and strategies. The "energy weapon" theory reveals how energy resources can be wielded as political tools, influencing the outcomes of international conflicts. 💡In 2022, Europe’s response to severe supply disruptions showcased the power of market liberalization and regional integration to build resilience. Understanding these events is key to navigating future energy challenges and ensuring stability. Join Filip Černoch’s and Jan Osicka’s lecture to explore the evolving role of energy in global politics and what it means for the future of international relations. 📅 22 October ⏰ 14.15-16.30 👉https://lnkd.in/egVfcEKd

🌍 Can international cooperation unlock the full potential of decarbonising energy-intensive industries? 🏭 This article by Simon Otto and Sebastian Oberthür explores the state of global governance for decarbonising key sectors such as iron and steel, cement, chemicals, and aluminium. While substantial progress has been made, particularly through initiatives like the Climate Club, critical governance gaps and geopolitical barriers remain. 🔑 Key Findings: 🌍 Global governance progress: Significant advancements in governance functions have been made, especially in market creation and international cooperation, though major gaps persist. 🚨 Challenges: Carbon leakage and geopolitical (geo)political tensions are key barriers to effective governance. 💡 Opportunities: Incremental improvements within existing institutions hold promise for meaningful progress, even before addressing larger geopolitical issues. 🕰 During my job interview in 2016 to work at The University of Manchester, I said I wanted to apply for an ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council 'New Investigator' grant to research polycentric climate governance. 🎉 I was very fortunate to receive the grant, which then began in Feb 2020. 📚 Now, eight years and four months after my job interview, the flagship output from this grant – a special issue on polycentric climate governance, published in Global Environmental Politics (MIT Press) – has been published! 🙌 I was delighted to edit the collection with Dave Huitema and Elke K. - it's been a pleasure. 😀 The issue draws together 26 authors, of whom the following are on LinkedIn: Elke K., Daniel Petrovics, Oscar Widerberg, Karin Bäckstrand, Eva Lövbrand, Jens Marquardt, Jale Tosun, Emiliano Levario Saad, Paula Castro, Marlene Kammerer, Axel Michaelowa, Shyamasree Dasgupta, Chris Höhne, Kristine Kern, Peter Eckersley, Elisa Kochskämper, Dr., Wolfgang Haupt, Niall Kelly & Ciara Kelly. 🌍 The issue explores a wide range of cases. Articles examine city networks, sub-national states, countries, NGOs, businesses, and more, which are located across the world. 🔑 Most of the articles are free to read or Open Access, and at least one more will be soon as well https://lnkd.in/ecwDD8U6 🤝 Huge thanks to the editorial team at GEP - DG Webster, Susan Park, Henrik Selin, Caitlin Hamilton and Susan Altman. And thank you to all of the peer-reviewers, whose time and expertise were invaluable. 🤩 A great team, and one that I'm very proud to have been a part of.

🌱 To what extent can the EU’s internal Green Deal agenda harmonise with the varying priorities of other nations in the global fight against plastic pollution? 🥤 While states negotiate a treaty to tackle plastic pollution, the EU is already rolling out packaging, product, and disclosure regulations to overhaul its plastics value chain. These efforts coincide with global negotiations aiming to secure one of the most significant environmental agreements since the Paris Agreement. ⚙️ The treaty’s comprehensive “life-cycle approach” addresses plastic pollution at every stage. Yet, the complexity of the issue, along with diverse stakeholder interests, makes this a formidable challenge. The EU’s internal policies, therefore, have significant global ramifications. Join Dominic Coppens’ lecture to explore the impact of the EU's regulations on international environmental policy and the negotiations against plastic pollution. 👉 https://lnkd.in/ezUN_ENy 📅 31 October ⏰ 16.00-17.30 Maastricht University Faculty of Law, Maastricht Centre for European Law (MCEL), Globalization and Law Network Maastricht
