The Jean Monnet Network GreenDeal-NET addresses the complex set of interlocking challenges related to sustainability.
About us
The Jean Monnet Network - The European Green Deal: Governing the EU’s Transition towards Climate Neutrality and Sustainability (GreenDeal-NET) – addresses the complex set of interlocking challenges in governance, policy, and law related to sustainability and climate neutrality which the European Green Deal brings to the fore. The network provides and enhances knowledge resources on the governance of the EU’s fair and effective climate and sustainability transition under the European Green Deal. It is designed to foster collaboration on new teaching, research and debating activities among the Network partners and the broader scholarly community in the field. We invite both institutions and individual experts to join us in driving the transition to a more sustainable future. GreenDeal-NET, coordinated by the Centre for Environment, Economy and Energy, is a collaboration network of 12 core European universities, expanding to become a much broader European and global network of key players active in the field of EU/European governance of the climate and sustainability transition. GreenDeal-NET builds on previous successful networking projects, including the COST Action on Innovations in Climate Governance (INOGOV www.inogov.eu), as well as the Jean Monnet Network on “Governing the EU’s Climate and Energy Transition in Turbulent Times” (GOVTRAN www.govtran.eu).

🪨How has the growing demand for critical minerals, such as lithium and cobalt, reshaped global supply chains and international relations? The scramble for control over critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel is driving a wave of new agreements, from bilateral deals like the Japan-US Critical Minerals Agreement to trade provisions in agreements like the Chile-EU deal and soft frameworks with mineral-rich states. 🌍These developments raise urgent questions about the role of law in critical mineral governance. How can we integrate climate goals, labor rights, human rights, and a just transition into these frameworks? And what are the limits of legal processes in a fast-changing geopolitical landscape, as seen in recent international disputes? Join Lorenzo Cotula’s lecture to explore how the governance of critical minerals is reshaping global trade, investment, labor rights, and environmental policies. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eP7BKd4G 📅 12 November ⏰ 14.15-16.00

🐳 What are the biggest strengths of the EU’s marine environmental laws, and how do they stack up against the weaknesses that remain? 🌱 The EU’s marine ecosystem remains vital for biodiversity, climate regulation, and economic growth. The 2008 Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) has developed ambitious goals to protect these areas put forth through integrated marine strategies and objectives. 🌸 However, the effectiveness of the MSFD has been limited, as its implementation has focused on strategies without establishing robust legal obligations for Member States. Additionally, core EU environmental laws, such as nature protection legislation, have seen limited application in the marine context. Join Suvi-Tuuli Puharinen’s lecture to explore the evolution and challenges of EU marine legislation and its implications for ocean ecosystems. 📅 14 November ⏰ 16.00-17.30 👉 https://lnkd.in/ee2WEkKd Maastricht Centre for European Law (MCEL), Maastricht Centre for European Law, Globalization and Law Network Maastricht

🏗 Why was the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) introduced, and how does it help prevent carbon leakage? The CBAM is designed to address carbon leakage by pricing emissions from carbon-intensive imports like cement, steel, aluminium, fertilisers, electricity, and hydrogen. By doing so, it encourages both EU and non-EU industries to adopt cleaner production processes and aligns with the EU's ambitious decarbonisation goals. 🏭 CBAM began its transition phase in October 2023 and will be fully operational by January 2026, impacting global industries and aligning them with the EU’s decarbonization goals. 👨🏫 Explore the global impact and challenges of CBAM in this insightful lecture by Stefan Weishaar’s lecture recording. 🐟 How can the EU bridge the gap between its ambitious marine protection goals and the practical enforcement of these laws? 🌊 The health of European marine ecosystems is essential for sustaining biodiversity, regulating the climate, and supporting economic sustainability. The 2008 Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) sets bold objectives for protecting these ecosystems through a comprehensive legal strategy. 🌿 Yet, the MSFD has often produced plans that lack strong, enforceable legal obligations for Member States. Furthermore, key EU environmental legislation, such as nature protection laws, has seen limited application in marine ecosystems. Join Suvi-Tuuli Puharinen’s lecture to dive into the development of EU marine legislation and the critical hurdles it must overcome. 📅 14 November ⏰ 16.00-17.30 👉 https://lnkd.in/ee2WEkKd Maastricht Centre for European Law (MCEL), Maastricht Centre for European Law, Globalization and Law Network Maastricht

⏳ D-18 until the Local Action for the EU Green Deal conference! 🌿 Meet our speakers: Jonas Meuleman is an early-career researcher at Ghent University's Department of Public Governance, funded by Research Foundation Flanders - FWO. As an advocate of sustainable transformation, his research interests centre around the political and social aspects of governing the transition toward sustainability. For his PhD-project, Jonas explores the tensions between urgency and justice in sustainability transitions, and the potential of democratic innovations to reconcile these tensions. He is also involved in GreenDeal-NET and the RETOOL project. 💬 "The transformation we face today is not just about doing more of the same or improving what we do, it is about doing differently and redefining how we do things altogether." 💡 He will take part in the Interactive Case Study entitled "Shaping Inclusive and Sustainable Cities: An Interactive Case Study for Transforming Portugal's Building Stock". 👉 Secure your spot by November 14: https://buff.ly/48a9xMA.
