How can we ensure more women-owned businesses get a fair share of procurement opportunities in mining? Right now, they secure just #1% of procurement contracts. Changing this isn’t just about fairness, it’s about connecting companies with top-quality services led by women. With the support of SheSupplies and Community Wisdom Partners, we’ve partnered with Women in Mining Botswana (#WiMBO) to advance Gender Responsive Procurement, creating more opportunities for women-led enterprises while helping companies connect with high-quality suppliers. 💡 What we did: We engaged 32 stakeholders across business, government, and finance to identify key challenges and opportunities. A focus group with 10 women entrepreneurs showcased the vital role their businesses play in mining, from freight and safety services to renewables and green tech. 🔎 What’s next: These insights will shape an Advocacy Strategy & Roadmap for WiMBO. The campaign, together with a workshop, will be launched on the yearly Women in Mining Pitso in May 2025. Trading Up: Empowering Women in Cross-Border Trade 🌍 ✨ Women play a crucial role in cross-border trade across the COMESA region, yet they often face challenges such as limited access to trade information, complex customs procedures, and security risks. To address these barriers, the ICR Facility, in collaboration with the COMESA Secretariat, recently organized Public-Private Dialogue (PPD) workshops at key border points: Mwami (Zambia-Malawi), Busia (Kenya-Uganda), and Chirundu (Zimbabwe-Zambia). These workshops brought together government representatives, border officials, and women’s business associations to discuss practical solutions for improving trade conditions. 💬 Participants explored key regional policies like the Simplified Trade Regime (STR) and the Charter for the Protection of Small-Scale Cross-Border Traders, which promote safer, more efficient, and inclusive trade environments. These initiatives are critical in ensuring that women traders have the support they need to grow their businesses and contribute to regional economic development. Amb. 🌿 Empowering Women, Strengthening Economies! 🌿 As we kick off Women's Economic Empowerment Week, we’re spotlighting initiatives that uplift women in business. On February 27, 2025, a Training of Trainers session was held in Port Harcourt, #Nigeria, equipping 80 market traders, including 74 women, with the tools to advocate for policy reforms. The focus? Tackling taxation challenges and ensuring fair treatment for businesswomen in the informal sector. A Rivers State Internal Revenue Service representative addressed concerns, explaining tax injustice, revenue collection issues, and upcoming tax system digitalization. Led by the President of BPW Port Harcourt, Garden City Rivers State Chapter, with support from the #ICR Gender Expert, the session was high-energy, solution-focused, and impactful. The event wrapped up on a celebratory note with certificates awarded to participants, recognizing their dedication to driving change and shaping a fairer business environment. A New Protocol to Prevent Sexual Harassment towards Women in Business in Burundi In January 2025, consultants from the ICR Facility met in Bujumbura with key stakeholders, including AFAB, government agencies, civil society organizations, and women’s rights groups, to address the persistent challenges faced by women in business across the country. A co-creation workshop with AFAB members and representatives from the Burundi Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Association of Women Lawyers of Burundi, was held to draft a protocol and code of conduct. This initiative aims to provide women with a safe reporting mechanism and ensure accountability.
