🍃 Green transition and Bulgarian energy sector’s transformation is underway. One of the driving forces behind this transformation is the efforts and projects of AES Bulgaria. 📌 The project for converting one of the units of AES’ TPP in Galabovo from coal to waste-derived fuel (Solid Recovered Fuel - SRF) and/or biomass, is yet another testament to this. Biomass will be a combination of wheat straw, corn straw and miscanthus. Biomass for energy ⚡ would be produced, processed and used locally in a sustainable and efficient way in full compliance with the EU Renewable Energy Directive.

❗ Applying alternative fuels can significantly reduce carbon emissions. This understanding is at the core of AES Bulgaria’s projects to modernize and transform one of TPP Galabovo’s units. 📌 The project is for the unit to replace coal use with SRF and/or biomass. SRF is produced from non-recyclable ‘end-of-life’ waste including predominantly paper and plastics which cannot be recycled, and therefore otherwise would end up in a landfill. This project would preserve 345 MW of AES’ TPP in Galabovo’s capacity for energy ⚡production, allowing for a gradual replacement of lignite generation with more renewable sources.

📌 AES Bulgaria is considering implementing molten salt energy storage innovative technology at one of its units in the AES’ TPP in Galabovo, replacing coal-fired energy generation. The main boiler with the so-called ‘power-to-salt’ battery with a steam generating system. The battery relies on molten salt as a medium for storing thermal energy ⚡ given that molten salt has excellent heat retention properties. When energy demand increases, the stored heat can be extracted from the molten salt and converted into energy through steam generation which is then used for energy production. ✅ With this innovative project, AES Bulgaria is contributing to Bulgaria's green 🍃 transition and accelerating the future of energy." 👉 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gVk-HtSP

AES Bulgaria, the largest investor in Bulgaria’s energy sector in the past 30 years, is considering two main projects, with the aim of converting the existing assets of TPP AES Galabovo to different fuel or usage. ✅ These projects would include a conversion of one of the units of AES’ TPP in Galabovo to an energy ⚡ storage facility and conversion of the other unit to waste-derived fuel (Solid Recovered Fuel - SRF) and/or biomass, which could be implemented in parallel or separately.

Dear friends, as summer fades and fall approaches, we’re starting to see more and more birds getting ready for their big migration south. 📌 AES has always prioritized responsible attitude towards nature, climate protection, and care for biodiversity. 🌿 Our Saint Nikola wind farm is the largest in Bulgaria and is at the heart of the developed Integrated Early Warning System for bird 🐦 protection. We are happy that our efforts are paying off and for over 14 years of operation of Saint Nikola WPP, there has not been a single recorded case of collision of target bird species with the park's turbines.✅
