  • 🚀 Exciting insights from Aquapak's latest study on sustainable packaging trends! The comprehensive report, ‘FMCG Flexible Packaging: Accelerating the Move from Plastic to Paper,’ highlights growing concerns among UK packaging experts over plastic usage and the impact of microplastics on our environment. Of the 100 experts surveyed, a significant 37% are extremely concerned, with 63% sharing notable apprehension. Microplastics, tiny particles from plastic breakdown, are increasingly threatening our oceans, waterways, and health. The study shows a strong consensus (84%) for tougher regulations to reduce microplastic pollution. A positive shift is on the horizon, with 92% of experts planning to transition from plastic to paper-based flexible packaging. However, this change is gradual, with most expecting completion by 2028. Encouragingly, 86% of businesses are ready to invest more in sustainable packaging to reduce environmental harm. Over half (56%) of businesses are willing to pay 4% - 5% more for eco-friendly materials, underscoring a commitment to sustainability despite cost implications. Long-term investment in recyclable and sustainable packaging is also anticipated to rise, with 65% of respondents expecting increased spending. Dr. John Williams, CTO at Aquapak, emphasizes the need for faster adoption of innovative solutions like Hydropol, a polymer that breaks down without forming harmful microplastics. 🌍 Let's reduce harm by accelerating the move to paper-based flexible packaging. Here is a link to the report: https://bit.ly/3zPIj0K 🌍 The future of FMCG packaging is sustainable and environmentally friendly! #Sustainability #FlexiblePackaging #ReduceHarm #PaperPackaging #EcoFriendly #Microplastics #Innovation #FMCG #Aquapak

  • A Balkan Startup is Unlocking Nature's Potential: Bpacks' Revolutionary Bark-Based Bioplastics 🌍 In a groundbreaking move for sustainable packaging, Bpacks, a Serbian startup, has unveiled the world’s first bark-based biodegradable bioplastics. These innovative materials are set to replace traditional petroleum-based rigid plastics used across various industries, including fresh produce, meat, and cosmetics. 🛠️ Pioneering Sustainability in Packaging Founded in 2022 by visionaries Mikhail Skalkin, Dr. Nikolay Semenov, and Lev Bolshakov, Bpacks operates from the UK and Belgrade, Serbia. Leading the charge in R&D are Dr. Semenov and the newly appointed head of innovation, Dr. Aleksandra Nešić. The team has ingeniously combined bark from timber production, used coffee grounds, and other bio-based materials to create versatile packaging solutions. 💡 A Game-Changer in Production While the specifics of the production process remain confidential due to pending patents, Bpacks assures that it involves no solvents. The process begins with compounding, proceeds to the creation of pellets or sheets, and culminates in the casting of solid packaging through injection molding or thermoforming. 🌿 Eco-Friendly and Efficient Bpacks’ bioplastic is 100% home-compostable and fully decomposes in moist soil within one to two months. Skalkin emphasizes, “Our bio-based plastic substitute can be manufactured using existing plastic production equipment, eliminating the need for new investments. Moreover, our packaging is 100% bio-based, with up to 75% of materials sourced from production waste.” ♻️ Repurposing Waste Bark, a massively underutilized resource, often ends up as waste. While bark has properties like anti-microbial and antioxidant benefits, its extraction typically involves harmful chemicals. Bpacks' process avoids this, making it safer and more sustainable. 🏭 Seamless Integration and Licensing Bpacks' technology is designed to integrate seamlessly with current manufacturing infrastructure, allowing for easy replacement of traditional plastic pellets. This flexibility means existing production equipment can be used without additional costly investments. 🍏 Extending Shelf-Life Naturally Ideal for packaging fruits, vegetables, and meats, Bpacks' materials have shown potential to extend shelf-life due to their anti-microbial properties, a crucial advantage for customers looking to reduce waste and increase freshness. 📈 A Bright Future for Bioplastics As companies face increasing pressure to reduce their carbon footprint, Bpacks’ innovative solutions offer a competitive and eco-friendly alternative. Innovative companies like Bpacks force us to think creatively. • 📣 Another Milestone in Food Safety: FDA Ends Sales of Food Packaging Containing PFAS In a significant move towards ensuring food safety, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that food packaging materials containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are no longer being sold for use in the U.S. PFAS, a diverse group of chemicals known for their resistance to grease, oil, water, and heat, have been linked to serious health effects. Their presence in food packaging like fast-food wrappers and microwave popcorn bags has been a major source of dietary exposure to these substances. This development is a result of the FDA’s research and leadership, combined with cooperation from industry. In 2020, the FDA engaged companies to cease sales of grease-proofing substances that contain certain types of PFAS following a post-market safety assessment. The research conducted by FDA scientists played a large part in helping the agency obtain commitments from manufacturers to voluntarily phase out the use of these substances containing PFAS in paper and paperboard food packaging products. This is a significant step forward in the protection of U.S. consumers from potentially harmful food-contact chemicals. The FDA will continue to conduct research and update evaluations using the most up-to-date science to ensure that risk determinations continue to be accurate and based on current science. This is a ‘win’ for public health. Let's strive for a safer and healthier future! 🎉🌍 #fda #foodsafety #publichealth #sustainability

  • 📣 Major Milestone in Sustainable Packaging Regulation! 🌍 On March 4, 2024, the Council's presidency and the European Parliament’s representatives reached a provisional political agreement on a proposal for a regulation on packaging and packaging waste. This is a significant step towards tackling the increase in packaging waste generated in the EU, harmonizing the internal market for packaging, and boosting the circular economy. The proposal takes into account the full life-cycle of packaging. It establishes requirements to ensure that packaging is safe and sustainable, by requiring that all packaging is recyclable and that the presence of substances of concern is minimized. It also lays down labeling harmonisation requirements to improve consumer information. In line with the waste hierarchy, the proposal aims to significantly reduce the generation of packaging waste by setting binding re-use targets, restricting certain types of single-use packaging, and requiring economic operators to minimise the packaging used. The deal reached today is provisional, pending formal adoption by both institutions. Key elements of the agreement include: Sustainability requirements and recycled content in packaging Strengthened requirements for substances in packaging Headline targets for minimum recycled content in plastic packaging for 2030 and 2040 New rules to reduce unnecessary packaging New binding re-use targets for 2030 and indicative targets for 2040 This agreement is a major step forward in our journey toward a more sustainable future. Let’s continue to innovate and drive change in the packaging industry! 💪 The whole article you can read here: Packaging: Council and Parliament strike a deal to make packaging more sustainable and reduce packaging waste in the EU - Consilium (europa.eu) Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development! #sustainablepackaging #circulareconomy #recycling #euregulations
