The lack of a committed supply chain for a 100% US-made battery energy storage system (#BESS), along with the significantly higher cost of manufacturing in the US, would far outweigh the benefits that come from local incentives, according to grid-scale BESS provider American Energy Storage Innovations, Inc. (AESI), which plans to open a factory in Malaysia. AESI's vice president of operations, Rick Cwiakala, disclosed more details about the future plant, its targeted markets and the growth opportunities faced by the company in its regular operations in an interview with Renewables Now 👉 https://lnkd.in/dZ8rfpVq

Petroleum companies QatarEnergy and TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) have signed an agreement to develop a #solar complex of up to 1.25 GWp in #Iraq. The development is part of the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), which TotalEnergies has been promoting since 2021. QatarEnergy said on Monday that it will acquire a 50% interest in the solar project, pending regulatory approval. Its French peer will retain the remaining 50%. The facility, set to be located in the Basra region of Iraq, will feature 2 million high-efficiency bifacial solar panels mounted on single-axis trackers. The partners will develop the project in phases, aiming to commission them between 2025 and 2027, QatarEnergy said. Once powered up, the solar complex will have the capacity to supply around 350,000 homes in the Basra region. “I am pleased to have concluded our entry into this very important project for Iraq’s energy sector, and look forward to working with our strategic partner, TotalEnergies, to progress it to fruition. We thank the Iraqi government for their trust, and TotalEnergies for this opportunity to support Iraq’s solar power development,” said Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, CEO of QatarEnergy and Qatar’s energy minister. QatarEnergy holds a 25% stake a consortium leading the development of the GGIP, a Basra-based natural resources and flared gas recovery project with a solar power component in the mix. TotalEnergies owns 45% of the GGIP consortium, with Iraq’s Basra Oil Company, holding the remaining 30%.

Two ocean energy projects in France, set to deliver about 29 MW of capacity, have been awarded EUR 51 million (USD 55.1m) as part of the latest EU Innovation Fund call, Ocean Energy Europe said on Thursday. These projects, selected under the call's pilot topic, are both located in Normandy’s Raz Blanchard. HYDROQUEST, in collaboration with Qair Group, will receive funding for its 17.5-MW FloWatt tidal farm, which will install seven 2.5-MW tidal turbines and is scheduled to go live in 2026. This project also received significant support from the French government. The second project, Normandie Hydroliennes’ 12-MW NH1 tidal farm, will feature four 3-MW turbines and is set for completion in 2028. Ocean Energy Europe said this additional 29 MW takes the existing pipeline of publicly supported European ocean energy projects in the next five years to 179 MW across 15 initiatives. The announcement underscores the importance of funding support in unlocking commercial-scale projects and accelerating the industrialisation of ocean energy, it added. “These two awards are another proof that tidal has reached technological maturity and is on its way to commercialisation. These two farms will be the largest in the world by the time they hit the water. This is further evidence that the French Government demonstrated great foresight by supporting tidal energy – and that tidal can become the next French industrial success story,” said Ocean Energy Europe CEO Remi Gruet.
