The #UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero on Thursday announced an investment support scheme to help build long-duration #energystorage (#LDES) facilities, which include pumped storage hydro. The government is launching the cap-and-floor scheme following a consultation earlier this year. Ofgem will act as regulator and delivery body, with the scheme’s first round is expected to be open to applicants next year. Ofgem will design the support scheme, which will be divided into two application routes -- one focused on mature technologies, and another on innovation. Currently, Great Britain has 2.8 GW of LDES from four existing pumped storage hydro facilities in Scotland and Wales. Other technologies include liquid air energy storage, compressed air energy storage and flow batteries, the government noted. “We are wasting no time in unlocking Britain’s vast renewable potential by expanding wind and solar power. But we also need to increase our ability to store this energy for when the sun isn’t shining, or the wind isn’t blowing,” said Energy Minister Michael Shanks. “We’re reversing a legacy that has seen no new long duration storage built for 40 years - and taking steps to unleash private investment in both established and new technologies,” Shanks added. A similar cap-and-floor scheme is used for electricity interconnectors that link Great Britain with other countries. According to the government, deploying 20 GW of LDES could save the electricity system GBP 24 billion ( USD 31.4bn/EUR 28.7bn) from 2025 to 2050. In addition, the National Electricity System Operator estimates that 11.5 GW to 15.3 GW of LDES will be needed by 2050 to reach net zero. The Association of Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA) welcomed the news scheme. "Long-duration energy storage is essential for meeting future low-carbon energy demands in a cost-effective way while ensuring the security of supply. Today’s announcement finally confirms a scheme the REA long advocated for to unlock private investment in several ready-to-go projects, allowing construction to begin,” said REA deputy director of policy Mark Sommerfeld. https://lnkd.in/dpjGPU-Z

#India has put on stream 13.3 GW of #solar cell and module manufacturing capacity in the first six months of 2024 as demand continued to increase amid an expected rise in the domestic project pipeline over the next few years. A total of 11.3 GW of capacity for the production of photovoltaic (PV) modules and 2 GW of PV cells was commissioned in January-June, according to data released by Mercom India (formerly Mercom Communications India). Those additions have brought the country’s cumulative installed capacity for solar module manufacturing to 77.2 GW, while solar cell production capacity amounted to 7.6 GW.
