Consumers across Southeast Europe have been boycotting supermarkets in the past week against what they see as soaring prices, but while in some countries their protests have led to a significant decline in sales and government caps on prices, in others they have had only a limited impact. Inflation in the five countries where protests have been held - Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina - slowed down sharply to an average 3% in 2024 as personal income growth outpaced the rise in prices, according to official data. However, salaries in these countries, of which only Croatia is a member of the European Union, are lower than the average for the bloc, while prices for a number of goods in supermarkets are at the same level as elsewhere in Europe. #consumers #boycott #retail #southeasteurope
