Sugar prices rise on ICE as Brazilian production falls Reuters - Published: 13 Sep 2024 - 07:34 Sugar prices traded on the ICE rose this Thursday, the 12th, after the release of data on production in the Center-South of Brazil. The October raw sugar contract closed up 34 cents, or 1.8%, at 19.07 cents per lb. Traders said “negative” production data from Brazil, the world’s biggest producer, had boosted prices. Sugar production in Brazil fell 6% in the second half of August, to 3.26 million tons , as mills reduced the amount of sugarcane they allocate to producing the commodity, according to information from the Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industry Union (Unica). Brokers said fires on about 230,000 hectares of sugarcane plantations in Brazil were likely to reduce yields, cutting sugar production. In turn, the white sugar contract due in October rose 2.1%, to US$ 540.10 per ton. French sugar maker Cristal Union expects its 2024 sugar beet production to reach the five-year average, it said. Czarnikow cuts Center-South sugar production estimate by almost 9% Reuters - Published: 11 Sep 2024 - 07:51 Ana Carolina Zancaner was responsible for the lecture "Global sugar market" during the NovaCana 2024 Conference Sugar production in Brazil's center-south region in the 2024/25 season is expected to be almost 9% below expectations, amid dry weather and burning in sugarcane fields that hit the state of São Paulo, the country's largest sugarcane producer, according to an assessment by Czarnikow presented at the NovaCana 2024 Conference. The commodities trading and market services company now projects sugar production in the Center-South at 39.2 million tons, the second highest in history, with a drop of more than 7% compared to the record of the previous cycle. As a result, sugar carryover stocks from the Center-South will be the lowest since at least 2020/21, falling below 2 million tons, according to a presentation made by Czarnikow's analysis area manager, Ana Carolina Zancaner. According to her, given the severe dry climate, the quality of the sugarcane from the current harvest does not allow for maximum use of the crystallization capacity added in recent years in Brazil. Regarding the fires, she cited data from the Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industry Union (Unica) indicating that more than 230 thousand hectares of sugarcane fields were affected , around 4% of the area of São Paulo. In 2021, the fires affected around 150 thousand hectares. The estimate for sugarcane crushing was reduced from 608 million tons to 594 million tons. Thus, the sugar supply will be balanced until mid-2025, before becoming a surplus. She also mentioned that the recovery of harvests in the Northern Hemisphere reduces dependence on Brazilian sugar, “but not much”, as Brazil will continue to account for more than 70% of global exports. For the next season (2025/26), the analyst noted that any estimate is now a “guessing game”, after below-average rainfall since the first quarter of this year and in the face of uncertainty about what the weather will be like from October onwards. Expectations of bumper harvest in India weigh on sugar prices Barchart - Published: 10 Sep 2024 - 06:08 | Last Updated: 10 Sep 2024 - 06:38 Sugar futures traded on ICE closed lower on Monday, 9, hitting two-week lows. The October raw sugar contract fell 0.08 cent, or 0.42%, to 18.83 cents per lb. The white sugar contract fell $6.70, or 1.26%, to $526.30 per tonne. The market is riding on optimism that above-average monsoon rains in India will lead to a bumper sugar crop. The Indian Meteorological Department reported that the country received 792.5 mm of rain during the current monsoon season as of September 5, or 8% more than the comparable long-term average of 734.8 mm. India's monsoon season runs from June to September. In addition, the increase in sugar production in Brazil is also a negative factor for sugar prices. Until mid-August, production in the Center-South increased by 5.4% year-on-year, to 23.91 million tons . Rich Asplund Adapted from NovaCana Secure all your sugar demands for 2024/2025 with us now. [Cepea] Crystal sugar prices rise in the São Paulo market Cepea/Esalq - Published: 10 Sep 2024 - 06:34 White crystal sugar prices are on the rise in the spot market in the state of São Paulo, according to the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea), at Esalq-USP. According to researchers at Cepea, the continuation of the long dry period, the intense heat and fires in sugarcane fields at the end of August have been supporting prices. In this scenario, the Cepea/Esalq Indicator, Icumsa color from 130 to 180, returned to the level of two months ago, closing at R$137.06 per 50 kg bag on Friday, the 6th. Research by Cepea indicates that demand for crystal sugar in the São Paulo spot market increased last week, however, it does not appear to be a market warming, but rather buyers seeking to secure stocks, fearing that prices will rise even further in the short term. In the balance from September 2 to 6, the Indicator's average was R$136.47 per 50 kg bag, an increase of 4.02% compared to the previous period. Raw sugar prices remain almost stable on ICE with support from Brazil Reuters - Published: 06 Sep 2024 - 07:37 Raw sugar futures traded on ICE were little changed in the session this Thursday, 5, remaining almost stable. The October raw sugar contract fell 0.02 cent, or 0.1%, to 19.22 cents per lb. Traders noted that the market continued to draw support from the prospect of reduced production in Brazil, linked to recent fires and continued hot, dry weather. Citi Commodities said in a note that it maintains its positive view on sugar prices, expecting them to reach 20 cents per pound in the coming months. The bank said it does not expect India to return to the sugar export market, which will be “overly dependent on Brazil’s Center-South, so any crop failure or logistical disruption could lead to a tightening of trade flows and a rise in prices.” In turn, the white sugar contract due in October fell 0.4%, to US$ 536.80 per ton. Sugar exports in August increase 8.2% in volume and fall 0.9% in revenue Agência Estado - Published: 06 Sep 2024 - 08:03 In August, Brazil exported 3.926 million tons of sugar and molasses, 8.2% more than in the same month of 2023, when it shipped 3.628 million tons. Revenue was 0.9% lower year-on-year, falling from US$ 1.812 billion to US$ 1.796 billion. As a result, the average price per ton of exported sweetener fell 8.4%, from US$ 499.40 to US$ 457.40. Data from the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex), of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), were released this Thursday, 5, and consider 22 working days - in August 2023 there were 23 working days. Adding the data released today with the consolidated figures from Agrostat, the Brazilian agribusiness foreign trade statistics system, the country exported 24.447 million tons of sugar from January to August 2024, an increase of 37.4% compared to the 17.793 million tons in the same period in 2023. On the same basis of comparison, revenue grew 41.47%, from US$ 8.611 billion to US$ 12.182 billion. Leandro Silveira Secure all your sugar demands for 2024/2025 with us now. Fires may impact sugar production, but should not raise prices, says StoneX Brazil has plenty of stocks and robust exports, says consultancy Globo Rural - Published: 06 Sep 2024 - 12:11 Consulting firm StoneX has doubts about what the sugarcane production mix will be like in 2024/25 given the fires that are affecting sugarcane producing areas in São Paulo. “Given the scenario of fires, the mix level may remain close to the most pessimistic estimates, of 40.5% for sugar,” it says in a report. Assuming a hypothetical scenario in which 30% of the estimated area of 215 thousand hectares is completely lost due to fires, and cannot be used, and assuming that the mix of burned sugarcane will fall to 40% – with total recoverable sugar (ATR) remaining high – there would be a potential loss of around 470 thousand tons of sugar, says the consultancy, in a report. Despite this scenario, StoneX does not see a major impact on international sugar prices in the long term. “For the global balance, the potential loss of 470 thousand tons would not change the consensus of two surplus harvests in 2023/24 (October to September) and 2024/25, whose estimates are 4.6 million tons and 1.2 million tons of positive balance, respectively”, it states. For short-term flow, this volume would be significant, but Brazil has ample sugar stocks and robust exports. “In the medium term, it would be only 3% of the potential to be shipped by the Center-South in the remainder of the 2024/25 harvest (April to March) and, in a global surplus context, without a relevant impact on the availability of demerara,” he adds. The consultancy also emphasizes that it is necessary to account for how much sugar will be lost due to the fires, as this will depend largely on the total area impacted and how much productivity there will be lost, if any, in the remaining burned sugarcane that will be harvested. StoneX estimates the crushing in the Center-South of the country at 602.2 million tons in 2024/25 and a sugar mix of 50.5%. So far, however, the mix has not responded to expected levels, standing at 49% in the accumulated season. Fernanda Pressinott Secure all your sugar demands for 2024/2025 with us now. India to extend ban on sugar exports: sources Reuters - Published: 06 Sep 2024 - 10:44 India plans to extend a ban on sugar exports for a second consecutive year as the world's biggest consumer of the sweetener faces the prospect of lower cane output, government sources said. New Delhi also plans to raise the price oil companies pay to buy ethanol from sugar mills as part of efforts to boost supplies of the biofuel, the sources with direct knowledge of the matter said. They declined to be identified as the decisions were not public. India's absence from the world sugar market would further squeeze global supplies, supporting benchmark prices in New York and London. The country's government plans to ban mills from exporting sugar at a time when supplies from Brazil, the world's biggest producer and supplier of the sweetener, are expected to dwindle due to a drought in the South American country. “In the current crop scenario, there is no scope for sugar exports,” one of the government sources said. “After meeting local sugar demand, our next priority is ethanol blending and we need a lot more cane to meet ethanol blending targets.” Seeking to reduce carbon emissions, India aims to increase the share of ethanol in gasoline to 20% by 2025/26, from the current 13% to 14%. Indian sugar mills such as EID Parry, Balrampur Chini Mills, Shree Renuka, Bajaj Hindusthan and Dwarikesh Sugar have increased their ethanol production capacity in recent years. The government is also considering a more than 5% increase in the procurement price of ethanol for the new marketing season starting in November, the sources said. Late last month, a government order said India would allow sugar mills to use cane juice or syrup to produce ethanol from November. India’s plans to extend a ban on sugar exports and raise domestic ethanol prices have not been previously reported. Both measures are expected to be announced later this month. A government spokesman did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. India, which is also the world's largest sugar producer after Brazil, banned mills from exporting the sweetener during the current season, which began on October 1, 2023. It was the first restriction on sugar exports in seven years. New Delhi allowed mills to export just 6.1 million tonnes of sugar during the last season, nearly half of the country's total shipment in 2021/22. Sugar production during the upcoming 2024/25 season is likely to fall to 32 million tonnes from 34 million tonnes this year due to the adverse impact of last year's erratic rains in the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka, sources said. The October raw sugar contract closed down 25 cents, or 1.3%, at 19.24 cents per lb. Traders said the market was technically weak after failing to hit new two-month highs this week. It rallied last week, boosted by fires in Brazil’s sugarcane fields. However, traders said sugar remained supported by the drought situation in Brazil and India's decision to allow sugar mills to use cane juice to produce ethanol . Consultancy firm Datagro has reduced its projection for sugar production in the Center-South of Brazil to 39.3 million tons . In turn, the white sugar contract due in October fell 0.5%, to US$ 539.10 per tonne. Maytaal Angel and Marcelo Teixeira Secure all your sugar demands for 2024/2025 with us now.
