Advancement in Renewable Energy in Brazil: Fuel of the Future Law Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has just signed the Fuel of the Future Law this past Tuesday (October 8).  Originating from PL 528/2020, the new legislation introduces a series of initiatives to promote low-carbon sustainable mobility and solidify Brazil's position as a leader in the global energy transition. Among the initiatives, the legislation establishes incentive programs for producing and consuming biofuels, such as biodiesel, ethanol, green diesel, biogas, biomethane, and sustainable aviation fuel. These include: • National Sustainable Aviation Fuel Program (ProBioQAV) • National Green Diesel Program (PNDV) • National Decarbonization Program for Natural Gas Producers and Importers and Incentive for Biomethane Furthermore, the legislation also establishes regulations for capturing and storing carbon dioxide, aiming for Brazil to avoid emitting 705 million tons of CO2 by 2037, thereby reinforcing the country’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, estimates that the law has the potential to unlock a total of BRL 260 billion shortly. For instance, Unica (the Union of the Sugarcane Industry) announced that BRL 130 billion is expected to be invested by the ethanol, biomethane, and aviation fuel sectors in the coming years, with the largest investment coming from Raízen at BRL 11.5 billion. Sergio Moro visited our Curitiba office in January 2023, when he was about to assume his position as Federal Senador representing his home state Paraná. Since then the world renowned anti-corruption operation Car Wash initiated by him, was under constant attack by basically the same forces currently battling with Elon Musk. 15 YEARS!
