The European Environment Agency has published its important ’Addressing the environmental and climate footprint of buildings’ report which assesses what's needed to make Europe’s building stock more sustainable. More than 30% of the EU's environmental footprint derives from buildings, making it the sector with the biggest impact on our natural world. The EEA recommends using "construction products with low environmental impacts" and calls out traditional cement as a reason why Europe's building stock is such a serious contributor to emissions. This issue isn't unique to Europe. At Partanna, we're leading a revolution in material science to make sustainable building materials the norm in construction. At #ClimateWeek and #UNGA in New York City, world leaders, financial institutions, NGOs and climate technology companies have gathered to discuss progress towards the goals of The Paris Agreement. Much of the attention has been on renewable energy, nuclear power and electrification. While they are crucial pieces of the jigsaw for achieving the goals of The Paris Agreement, the world can't forget that the building materials we use are often tearing it down. Portland cement is responsible for 9% of global CO2 emissions. Policymakers and the construction industry need to embrace new sustainable building materials if we're going to achieve net zero. Innovation in material science is another crucial piece of the jigsaw that should not be forgotten. At Partanna we're working tirelessly to change the way the world builds, to heal the planet.

Summer 2024 was the Earth's warmest on record, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service. August was also the 13th month in a 14-month period where the global average temperature exceeded 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. The alarming data re-enforces the urgent need for us to decarbonize wherever we can. The global construction industry is said to be responsible for 28% of global emissions, the building materials we use are actually tearing it apart. Portland cement (OPC) alone is responsible for 9% of global CO2 emissions. But it doesn't have to be this way, Partanna has created a sustainable alternative to OPC, using cutting edge technology and innovative materials. If construction companies swapped out OPC for our sustainable binder, we would make fast and impressive progress towards decarbonizing the construction sector.
