Spot the difference! Can you spot the difference between these photos of the signing ceremonies of De Beers Group and the Botswana Government in 1996 and 2025? I’m sure you can. There are many reasons why I’m proud to share the picture of three outstanding leaders - Minister Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, Alessandra Berridge and Ndibo Oitsile - and myself. One of them is that I’m the only man in the picture. Contrast this with the all-male signing photo from 1996 and you have a great example of the progress that has been made over the past 30 years. And yet, the journey is far from over. Many challenges remain. So, this International Women’s Day, I hope that we can work together in the pursuit of a more equal world. Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can be part of inspiring and driving equality, rights and empowerment for all women and girls.

  • Celebrating an enduring Partnership Last week marked a pivotal moment in our shared history as the De Beers Group and the Government of Botswana signed a transformative natural diamond sales and mining agreement. This landmark decision reinforces Botswana's position at the heart of the global diamond industry. As we showcased our journey from mining and diamond sorting to the successes of relocation of the sales function from London to Botswana, the establishment of the Diamond Technology Park which hosts diamond cutting and polishing factories,   and improving the downstream segment with exquisite jewelry design and manufacturing through our Shining Light Awards and De Beers Forevermark, we celebrated a partnership built on collaboration, innovation, and socioeconomic progress since 1967. The iconic Orapa House, where this celebration took place, resonates deeply in our hearts, as it symbolizes the pioneering spirit of Botswana's first woman Minister of Minerals, Dr. Gaositwe Chiepe. Together with leaders in Botswana, at De Beers Group, its stakeholders and many other local  natural diamond  partners we honor this full-circle moment, committing to driving local mineral beneficiation and improving livelihoods. #Building Forever #NaturalDiamonds #BotswanaDeBeersGroup #Innovation #Partnership #SocioeconomicDevelopment

𝗕𝗢𝗧𝗦𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗔 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗗𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗕𝗘𝗚𝗜𝗡 𝗔 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗝𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗬 𝗧𝗢 𝟮𝟬𝟱𝟰 The Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Joy Kenewendo and CEO of De Beers Group Al Cook yersterday put pen to paper to take the partnership between the two parties to 2054. The enduring partnership has been in place since 1969 with the formation of Debswana. Key part of the agreements are a 10-year Sales Agreement and 25 mining licences for Debswana operated mines. The latter will take effect in 2029 until 2054. The Sales Agreement for Debswana run-of-mine production will see allocation for state owned diamond marketing company, Okavango Diamond Company rising to 30% with option to gradually increase allocation to 50%. The signing, performed in Gaborone at the iconic Orapa House brought to an end nearly a six year long protracted negotiation that spanned two administrations.
