About us

Debswana is the largest private sector employer in Botswana, with more than 4 000 staff members. These are mainly found on mining sites, along with just over 5 000 fixed-term contractors and a small staff complement at the Debswana Corporate Centre in Gaborone, Botswana’s capital. Diamond mining operations are located at Orapa, Letlhakane, Damtshaa (OLDM) and Jwaneng. These four mines have contributed significantly to the economic growth of Botswana, as well as producing revenues responsible for lifting the country from one of Africa’s least developed to an international development success story. Botswana is now a middle-income country independent in means as well as name.Debswana is a key player in the national economy of Botswana.

    𝐃𝐄𝐁𝐒𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐀 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝐄𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐖𝐄𝐑 𝟐𝟓𝟎 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐆 𝐆𝐈𝐑𝐋𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐏𝐘𝐄 & 𝐒𝐔𝐑𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐒 The recent GirlEng workshop at BIUST sparked excitement and ambition in 250 young women from Palapye and nearby areas, opening doors to the vast world of engineering. Hosted by De Beers, Debswana, and DTCB alongside the Ministry of Education, this annual event provides an engaging path for young girls to step confidently into STEM. Through inspiring talks from female role models, hands-on activities, and career guidance, the girls learned how engineering shapes Botswana’s future. During the workshop, young women got a rare glimpse into the world of engineering through conversations with female pioneers in fields like mechanical and chemical engineering. They asked burning questions about university choices, career paths, and the realities of life as an engineer. More than just a workshop, GirlEng inspired these girls to dream big, break boundaries, and reshape the future of STEM—one bold step at a time. With a focus on breaking gender barriers, GirlEng is about igniting dreams, strengthening knowledge, and building Botswana's future STEM leaders.

    This morning, Executive Head of Safety and Sustainability, Mpho Mosate delivered the Keynote address at the Southern African Insititute of Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH) Conference opening ceremony, hosted in collaboration with the Botswana Association of Occupational Hygiene under the theme: Sustainable Occupational Hygiene in changing work environments and emerging economies. While highlighting Debswana's commitment to leading by example by innovating to eliminate occupational health hazards and diseases, Mosate emphasised the importance for collaborative effort in the space of occupational hygiene. "We must engage all stakeholders, unions, employers, workers, regulators and the community to foster cultural practices which protect health of workers in the workplace," she expressed. While delivering closing remarks, Botswana Mine Workers Union President, Joseph Tsimako called for preventative action through elimination by design of equipment and working environments being given precedence over controls to be applied by workers. #debswana55thanniversary #debswanadiamondstory #MyDiamondStory #DiamondsForDevelopment

    𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐃𝐔𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐒 𝐔𝐑𝐆𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐄 𝐉𝐎𝐁 𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐒 The 2024 cohort of graduates from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development’s (MLGRD) Remote Area Development Programme have been urged to embrace opportunities for self-employment and job creation. In her keynote address at the Graduation Ceremony, Debswana’s Executive Head of Corporate Affairs, Ms. Rachel Mothibatsela, emphasized the importance of using the skills gained to foster economic independence. The event, held in partnership with Kitso International College, was themed “Engineering Equal Opportunities: Skills for a Better Future.” The graduates, trained in various automotive technologies, will receive additional financial and operational support, including assistance from Webbs Motors, to establish their businesses. Ms. Mothibatsela stressed the significance of this support, noting that it provides a strong foundation for entrepreneurial success. She encouraged graduates to capitalize on these resources and contribute to the nation’s broader agenda of innovation and development. Deputy Permanent Secretary - Operations, Ms. Mmamiki Kamanakao, highlighted that this initiative aligns with the government’s goal of fostering inclusive social protection by enabling rural youth to transition from social benefit programs to self-sufficiency. With training in automotive repair and engineering, these young people are positioned to become thriving entrepreneurs in their communities.

The program is designed to close the digital skills gap of students and enhance their interest on studying STEM related courses in the future. Speaking at the launch of the program, Principal Analyst - Digital Business Architect Ms. Monkgogi Tshosa, who is the Next Gen Digital North team lead said through the project they want to bridge this gap while giving a voice to the students at Chobe Junior Secondary School. The program will also empower learners with coding and robotic skills. Giving a keynote address at the launch, Ms Tebogo Seitei the Principal Education Officer for Chobe Region reiterated the necessity of digital skills in improving the country’s global competitiveness, as the skills can be exported to the world in the long run. She further commended Chobe CJSS for embracing this opportunity and utilizing it to positively influence the journey of learners. Ambassador for Good is a program designed to enable employees to utilize their skills and their time to contribute positively to the success of the communities and the nation.

Led by CEEP Manager Godfrey Maswere, the workshop focused on enhancing the skills of beneficiaries to help them expand their businesses beyond Debswana contracts. Experts from ABSA, the Local Enterprise Authority, and the Botswana Unified Revenue Service provided insights on financial literacy, tax compliance, and business management. The interactive sessions aimed to engage participants and offer tailored advice for real-world challenges. This training is part of Debswana’s efforts to empower local businesses, enhance competitiveness, reduce the import bill, and support Botswana's economic growth.

    Debswana Deputy Managing Director, Mr Koolatotse Koolatotse, earlier today, 11 October 2024, addressed the Kang Community as keynote speaker at the village’s Culture Day. As an alumni of Macha Senior Secondary School, Mr Koolatotse reflected on his deep personal connection to the area and gave testimony of warmth of the Batlhaping culture. Speaking under the theme “Digital Cultural Diversity: A Pathway to Economic Growth,” he emphasized how digital transformation presents new opportunities for preserving and promoting Botswana’s rich cultural heritage. By embracing digital tools, communities such as Kang can showcase local art, fashion, and music to global audiences, driving economic empowerment and sustainable growth. He also highlighted the importance of ensuring that every Motswana is equipped to participate in the digital economy. Through education and digital literacy, Debswana is committed to fostering a knowledge-based society, aligned with Vision 2036, where culture and technology work together to fuel economic development. The Deputy Managing Director called for inclusive growth, ensuring that rural communities, women, and marginalized groups have equal access to these opportunities. Mr Koolatsotse encouraged the community to uphold and embrace cultural attributes such as Botho, love, respect as these are critical attributes that drive positive Diamond sentiments.
