Decoding Pensions: Mmila’s Insider Look at the Rules, Risks, and Rewards from the BPS Conference Last Friday March 14th, our Communications Specialist, Bontle Lulu Rapitsenyane, moderated a panel discussion on “Navigating Regulatory Changes and Compliance Challenges in Pension Fund Administration” at this year’s Botswana Pensions Society (BPS) conference, held at the Wildview Resort in Kasane. The discussion covered key regulatory developments, including IFRS 17, data protection, new rules on board representation, and changes in provident funds, particularly the five-year payout arrangement.  Key Takeaways  This year’s BPS conference, themed “Pension Funds in Botswana: Exploring the Future with Innovation, Sustainability, and Growth,” provided invaluable insights into the evolving pension fund landscape. The discussions reinforced the critical role of pension funds and administrators in ensuring financial security for individuals in their retirement years.  A key focus of the conference was the shifting role of pension administrators. No longer just service providers, they are now recognized as strategic partners in financial security, guiding individuals through their retirement journey. Ms. Patrinah Masalela, Director of Insurance and Pensions at the Ministry of Finance, emphasized the need for real-time and relevant member education. She urged administrators to tailor educational initiatives to different member segments, making pension literacy more impactful and accessible.  Regulatory changes were another focal point. New rules will reshape board compositions by restricting shareholder representatives from serving on the boards of their pension fund administrators. While these adjustments pose challenges, they also create opportunities for stronger, more independent governance structures.  The conference also underscored the growing importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in pension fund management. Administrators and pension funds must align their strategies with sustainability standards to meet regulatory expectations while ensuring long-term financial stability.  Beyond financial planning, the need for a holistic approach to retirement was highlighted.
