In 2018, the Saddle Dam D of the Xe-Pian Xe-Namnoy power project in south eastern Laos collapsed, releasing 5bn cubic litres of water. The flash flood resulted in many deaths and forced thousands of victims to lose their homes. Looking into this disaster, 3vG was able to determine that signs of impending collapse were there. Using InSAR historical data, evidence of displacement within the dam came to light, months ahead of the event. Had 3vG been monitoring the site, early warning would have likely been provided. The most recent development in InSAR processing is Displacement DataStream, which introduces a fresh approach to detecting risks at an early stage. It is a cutting-edge satellite InSAR monitoring service offered by 3vGeomatics, providing frequent updates on displacement measurements following each new image collection. The Displacement DataStream provides timely updates on time series displacements, average movement rates, and detection contours for displacement and acceleration. These updates are delivered through 3vG's Motionary web platform within 24 hours of receiving new satellite images. In contrast to traditional InSAR technology, which involves periodic delivery of individual products, Displacement DataStream offers a continuous stream of new and updated data directly to Motionary. This approach eliminates the burden of data reception, file management, and integration for end users, allowing them to easily interpret and analyze the information. This innovative process greatly enhances the accessibility of InSAR data, enabling more effective analysis and risk management. The City of Seattle initiated construction on a new tunnel in July 2013, spanning 1.7 miles and with a diameter of 57 feet. This project, costing $2.1 billion, aimed to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct and improve civil engineering and infrastructure in the area. However, the world's biggest tunnel boring machine, known as "Big Bertha", halted its operations in December 2013 beneath Pioneer Square, a historic district in Seattle. In November 2014, crews began digging a 120-foot deep vertical recovery pit to access and repair Big Bertha. Due to the project's size and location, it was difficult to acquire accurate displacement measurements. Tunnels transport water, sewage, electricity, and gas, and are used for underground transport. In civil engineering, they avoid existing infrastructure, reduce surface disruption, and offer direct routes through terrain. Common building methods include cut-and-cover and using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). City tunnel projects follow rules to limit surface disruption and monitor nearby structures. InSAR technology allows precise monitoring over vast areas, often replacing traditional methods. Since the early 1990s, radar satellites have been gathering images from all over the world. Both urban and rural areas around the globe have stored data that can be used for InSAR studies. 3vG is capable of performing a data archive search across various satellite image databases to assess the availability of data for your particular area of interest. If enough imagery is found, we can proceed with an InSAR analysis to calculate displacement during the given time period. In the field of geotechnical engineering, precise observation and evaluation of ground displacement is essential to guarantee the security and steadiness of any monitored location. In response to the demand for more adaptable and accurate displacement visualization, 3vG created variable heatmaps for Motionary. Variable heatmaps reveal displacement rates across an entire site for any monitoring period of a user’s choice. This powerful InSAR analysis tool uncovers correlations, patterns, and anomalies that static heatmaps cannot. In underground mining, Satellite InSAR is utilized to oversee surface structures, entry points, and nearby areas of concern. The construction of these mines typically involves creating an access point and shafts for extracting ore, as well as ventilation systems and other components. Mine owners and operators are responsible for ensuring the safety of both personnel and machinery, both above and below ground. By setting appropriate parameters, InSAR has the ability to track the surface impact of underground mining operations. Additionally, it can also monitor above-ground assets such as offices, storage areas, crushers, smelters, and access roads to and from the mine. The wide spatial coverage of InSAR enables ongoing remote monitoring of surface and underground operations. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) is a technology that uses satellites to remotely sense and map changes in the Earth's surface. The satellites emit radar signals and record the reflections, measuring both the intensity and phase of the signal. By comparing pairs of images taken at different times, the phase information can be used to detect ground and infrastructure displacement. This process involves calculating the difference in phase between the images, filtering out unwanted signals, and converting the resulting data into standard units. The accuracy of these measurements is dependent on the wavelength used for imaging. While the intensity data is not used in the InSAR process, it can be used for quickly tracking displacement beyond the capabilities of InSAR. At 3vG, we strive to create top-notch satellite-based technology for remote monitoring. Our goal is to provide practical information to our clients. We specialize in offering timely displacement data for detecting geohazards over large areas, with the added benefit of professional assistance.
