  • As #SaveClinic554 reminds us everyday, abortion access in New Brunswick could be expanded with the stroke of a pen. 🖊 The newly elected Liberal government has a unique opportunity to improve reproductive care in the province and amend Regulation 84-20 that currently restricts Medicare funding for abortions to hospital settings. 🏥 Currently there are only 3 hospitals in the entire province that are approved to provide abortion care - 2 in Moncton, and 1 in Bathurst. Upheld by ex-Premier Blaine Higgs, this regulation continues to restrict abortion access for New Brunswickers, despite being in contravention to the Canada Health Act. It ultimately led to the January closure of New Brunswick's only independent abortion clinic, Clinic 554, leaving thousands of Frederictoners without a family doctor, and many without in-person abortion care and gender affirming care options. 🤞 We hope that under @susanholt's, the NB government leadership will make it a priority to abide by the Canada Health Act and repeal the unconstitutional Reg 84-20. #Axe8420 #SaveClinic554 #NewBrunswick #NBPoli

    • A screenshot of a tweet from @SaveClinic554 that reads "Your daily reminder that the repeal of Reg 84-20 does not require legislation. It is a cabinet decision, and @susanholt could accomplish it with a stroke of her pen.

@susanholt
 peut procéder à son abrogation.

  • Requiring anti-abortion Crisis Pregnancy Centres to disclose information about their services is a huge step forward in combatting abortion misinformation, and timely access to reproductive healthcare. 👏 Read our statement here: https://buff.ly/3UtN9bB Last year, we published a study where we examined over 140 CPCs in Canada - most of whom have charitable tax status - and found that a majority of them either spread misleading or inaccurate info about abortion, or presented themselves deceptively, not only creating stigma around abortion, but also delaying access to critical, lifesaving healthcare. ARCC commends the government of Canada for taking action to protect vulnerable pregnant people who may be misled into attending a pregnancy centre that uses deceptive tactics. The legislative changes will also create more public confidence in the charitable sector. 👊 Our advocacy works! Thank you to all who signed and shared our petition from April calling for CPCs to be ineligible for charity tax status, and our peers who have been consistently advocating for better access to abortion in Canada and more accountability for deceptive CPCs. While we acknowledge there is more to be done, we celebrate this win with a renewed energy to keep fighting for increased abortion access and protecting our reproductive rights!

  • Do you have an event coming up? Support ARCC's mission by displaying our new (glossy!) brochures at your next info table! 📬 DM us with your name, address, and desired quantity (10, 25 or 50) and we'll send them your way, free of charge. With the upcoming election, and more anti-abortion rhetoric making its way into our communities than ever, we are at a pivotal moment for reproductive rights in Canada. ARCC has been working for almost 20 years as the only nation-wide political pro-choice group to ensure abortion rights and access. 🎉 Recently we've helped defeat anti-choice bills in Parliament, increase access to information about abortion, intervened in court cases, lobbied municipalities to pass graphic flyer by-laws, and so much more - now we need your support! 🖨️ Feeling crafty? You can also print and fold our brochure yourself at https://buff.ly/4eMB5KE

    Whenever I asked anyone who to speak to about abortion advocacy in Canada, Joyce Arthur’s name came up. In fact I think she had 4 different people do an email introduction between her and I in preparation for my visit. So I knew I was going to be speaking to the right person! Joyce founded Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada (ARCC) in 2005. ARCC is the only nation-wide political pro-choice group devoted to ensuring abortion rights and access. Their website has a wealth of resources with statistics and research on all things abortion related, very handy guides and tools for the general public, media and politicians. The main focus of ARCC is combatting the anti choice movement and ensuring any movements to erode abortion access through private members bills are defeated. They also do great work in helping people recognise ‘crisis pregnancy centres’ for what they are - anti choice religious fronts trying to create barriers to all options available to Canadians. ARCC have changed the language of conscientious objectors - health professionals who choose not to provide abortion care because of their ‘conscience’ - to ‘belief based care denial’ which centres the denial of care, not the conscience. What do you think about that term? Winston Churchill Trust (Australia) Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada

    After years of advocacy, the centralized hub for sexual and reproductive health on Health Canada's website is live. This may seem like a small step, but it's an important one. Delivering on a 2019 👀 election promise, you can now find essential info on the Health Canada website—from preventing and managing STIs to fertility treatments and surrogacy—all in one spot. It isn’t perfect, but it’s a direct result of years of tireless advocacy from community leaders, healthcare professionals, and activists who have pushed relentlessly for a space like this. It's proof that community pressure and persistent advocacy matter. We still have a long way to go to make sexual and reproductive health accessible for everyone in Canada. Check out the new hub: https://lnkd.in/eXbgeRB5 Let's keep pushing for better.#HealthcareForAll #AdvocacyWorks #SexualHealth #SRHR #HealthEquity

  • 🎉 HUGE news - Health Canada has added a section about abortion to their website! 🎉 After years of advocacy, there is now information about abortion in Canada on the official Government of Canada website! ARCC played a key role in getting this promise into the Liberal platform back in 2019, and have since been petitioning the Libs to see it through. Huge thanks to everyone who signed our e-petition and helped make this happen! 🙌 We are thrilled to see the Liberals keeping their promise, and to see information about abortion being shared widely and on a trusted platform. We are excited to see how this resource develops and improves in the future! 🖱 Browse the webpage here: https://buff.ly/4eqySnP

  • Happy #WorldContraceptionDay! This past week, our Executive Director Joyce joined global experts in abortion & contraception at the 15th #FIAPAC (International Federation of Abortion and Contraception Professionals) Congress in Brussels! 🌍✨ Joyce displayed three posters on behalf of ARCC, and discussed with attendees why countries don’t need abortion laws and why “conscientious objection” does not belong in in healthcare. 📸 Below Joyce is pictured with the Poland’s "Abortion Dream Team" (from L-R, Justyna Wydrzyńska, Joyce, Natalia Broniarczyk, Kinga Jelińska - https://adt.pl/en/); Joyce standing with her poster “Abortion Laws: Why We Don’t Need Any"; Joyce in front of a wall of hand-crafted vulvas – artwork featured at the FIAPAC dinner party.
