⛵ The 2024 Atlantic Momentum Index has arrived ⛵    Every sailor knows the old saying: We can’t direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails.     Those who follow our work will recall the 2023 Atlantic Momentum Index. Inspired by the region’s good governance and social cohesion during the pandemic, we wanted to find out whether there was real and measurable momentum in the Atlantic economy.     The results of the study were highly optimistic. Sixteen of the 20 key social and economic indicators we examined, or 80 percent, showed progress. There was indeed momentum in Atlantic Canada — an exciting, statistics-driven revelation after years of stagnation.     In our follow-up 2024 Atlantic Momentum Index, we once again measured the state of economic progress in Atlantic Canada.     Our findings show that momentum has slowed. Of the 25 indicators chosen for this year’s study, only 15 — or 60 percent — show momentum.    (The indicators measured include GDP, immigration, employment rate, labour force participation, investment in renewable energy, housing starts, poverty rate, life satisfaction and community belonging, among others.)    While several key economic measures still show momentum, economic growth has slowed. Business investment is flagging and there is not enough housing and health care for the growing region, write the report’s authors, journalist Stephen Maher and Andrew Sharpe, founder and Executive Director of the Centre for the Study of Living Standards.   The 2024 index still shows considerable points of strength, including in employment and labour productivity. But to ensure that momentum continues — and is not just a post-pandemic blip set against a bleaker historic trend — a concerted and co-ordinated effort to spur and manage growth is critical.     In other words, Atlantic Canadian policymakers and leaders need to adjust the sails.     For the full report, follow the link in the comments.

Congrats to Red Ochre Café, powered by Atlantic Association of CBDCs support to overcome pandemic challenges and thrive! A true example of resilience in Atlantic Canada’s rural communities. The Atlantic Association of CBDCs congratulates this year’s Atlantic Business Award of Distinction winner, Red Ochre Café. This year, Red Ochre Café from Ochre Pit Cove in Newfoundland and Labrador won the hearts of the judges with its story of survival and success. Just six months after opening the restaurant, Covid stopped the world in its tracks. Ray Dwyer’s young business, like many others at the time, was struggling. Ray had financial assistance from CBDC Trinity Conception to open The Red Ochre Café, and so he reached out for a special Covid loan. The café now had a fighting chance at staying open and Ray was able to keep his staff employed.
