My Birthday Wish This year, to celebrate my birthday, I gathered a circle of wise women around me. Inspired by one of my favourite Rilke quotes (below), I asked each of them for a gift in the form of a question—one that I could live into over the coming year. As you know, I love questions. They’re a way to discover new parts of myself as I navigate the "messy middle" of change. They’re how I seek understanding with those who see the world differently. Questions are where magic and transformation happen. Whether practical or whimsical, questions are signposts, invitations to adventure. More than any single word or resolution, a question asks me to pause, explore, and play. It invites me not to rush to an answer but to be comfortable in the unknown, in wonder, in possibility. This year, I would love to add your questions to my collection. What question would you gift me to live into? You can share it here or send it by email to Tania@advivum.ca. Most of us crave a “safe place to fall”, somewhere or someone to tumble into when things get overwhelming. I challenged the participants of the Sanctuary of Self retreat to wonder why that “safest place” wasn’t in their own hearts. For so many of us, the punishing self-talk, the constant drive for perfectionism, the endless comparison, and the shame of imposter syndrome all mean that it is NOT safe to be within our own thoughts. But what if Self-Sanctuary was possible? What if when times got tough, we went to the most sacred of places, our own hearts, and just sat there amidst soothing, comfort and love? We decided to give it a try. Silence became peace. Judging became acceptance. Criticism became terms of endearment. I’m still practising, but what a delight to know there is a safe haven within where I can find respite when I need it. It was a thrill to be up on the TEDx stage.  And it was nerve-wracking. And it was a lot of work.  And it was a time of community and mutual support.  And it was a moment that left me proud. Why do it? I really support the mission of TEDx - to get people thinking differently, sharing openly and connecting deeply. My mission is to encourage two things: I would like people to travel more. When we step outside our neighbourhoods and visit other countries, cultures, and people, we can reconnect with our humanity and transcend the biases and privileges we live with. And I would like people to welcome change—it is the thing that will bring continued vitality and thriving into our individual lives and our planet, especially as we move through midlife and beyond. Stepping onto the TEDxMechanicsville stage was surreal. The usual nerves kicked in, but as I looked out, they melted away, replaced by a sense of purpose and gratitude. Sharing the stage with incredible storytellers was humbling; each voice was unique and impactful, reminding me of the power stories hold. As I began to share my own journey—how travel has changed my life and led me into new possibilities—I could feel the room lean in. It was in that moment I realized that maybe, just maybe, my story would resonate with someone else. Perhaps it would encourage them to take their own leap, to step into the magic of midlife with a little more courage. Here's to embracing the journey, to sharing our stories, and to helping each other discover what’s waiting in the middle. Thanksgiving is a precious time for me—a time to pause, reflect, and truly appreciate the blessings in my life. I’ve long embraced the daily practice of gratitude, which keeps me grounded and humble. It opens my eyes to the abundance around me, reminding me that joy can often be found in the simplest moments. This Thanksgiving, and every day, I’m especially grateful for my work family, who inspire me, and my family and friends, who fill my life with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Celebrating all I’m thankful for reminds me of the richness that exists in the simplest moments and the connections that truly matter.
