🍂🐿️ Did you know that the Richardson’s Ground Squirrel—also known as the prairie gopher, yellow gopher, flicker tail, or picket pin—is named after naturalist John Richardson, who first collected specimens in the 1820s? These little furballs have been spending the summer munching down and now, as the leaves change, these squirrels are burrowing down, setting up their cozy underground homes for a long winter nap. Talk about the ultimate fall retreat! 🍁 #RichardsonsGroundSquirrels #Hibernation #Fall #AJMEnvironmental

This week, AJM is thrilled to attend the Electricity Transformation Canada Conference! We’re joining energy leaders from wind, solar, and energy storage sectors to network, collaborate, and champion responsible development. This photo (and almost all we share!!) was taken by an AJMer on their field adventures! AJM Biologist, Laura Southcott, entered this beautiful shot of a wind turbine near Pincher Creek, AB into our summer field photo contest. Thanks Laura! 🤩 #AJMEnvironmental #ETC2024 #ResponsibleDevelopment

Migratory birds are the ultimate global travellers, crossing continents without a passport! They follow the sun, the food, and the best weather—no borders can stop them. Just like us, they seek out the best conditions, proving they’re true citizens of the world. Let’s celebrate these incredible flyers and protect the environments they depend on! Read about migratory bird regulations here: bit.ly/3MHyAwE Photos: American Robin (Turdus migratorius) and Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis). #WorldMigratoryBirdDay #AJMEnvironmental

AJM'ers are slithering off to southeastern Alberta for a snake research trip! That's right, they’ll be spending the week with some of the most elusive and fascinating locals - rattlesnakes, bullsnakes, terrestrial gartersnakes, plains hognose snakes and plains gartersnakes! All species are designated as "Sensitive" or at risk of decline in Alberta and the former three are listed as "Special Concern" federally by the Committee on Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. The purpose of this project is to support the conservation of these snake species and their habitats in Alberta by collecting robust, long-term population data to inform future management decisions. AJMers who are heading out to the field this week will be conducting annual surveys to tag and measure snakes at the hibernacula sites, and by determining trends in hibernacula use over time through analysis of field and remote monitoring data. We’re sure there will be plenty of hissing, rattling, and maybe even some scaling new heights (pun intended) in wildlife research. Stay tuned for ssssssensational updates and photos! #AJMEnvironmental #FieldResearch #Snakes #Alberta #ResponsibleDevelopment

As the seasons change and the days get shorter, hitting the snooze is tempting, but not when you're excited to hang out with your co-workers/animals! 🐾 Bringing our furry, scaly, feathery, bumpy friends to work brightens our day! If you're feeling the seasonal slump, consider the magic of pets in the workplace or pop by for a visit. 🐶🦎 #SeasonsChanging #OfficePets #AJMEnvironmental #WorkplaceWellness #ResponisibleDevelopment #SustainableDevelopment

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, AJM Environmental stands in solidarity with Indigenous communities across Canada. We reflect on the importance of acknowledging the painful history and lasting impacts of residential schools while honouring the strength, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. At AJM, we are committed to listening, learning, and taking action towards reconciliation. Today, we encourage everyone to take a moment to educate themselves, engage in meaningful conversations, and support Indigenous voices in building a future rooted in respect, understanding, and unity. #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation #EveryChildMatters #Reconciliation #IndigenousVoices #AJMEnvironmental

Did you know the Greater Short-horned Lizard is a tiny, prehistoric-looking lizard with short horns on its head and body, found in rugged areas of the Northern Great Plains? In Canada, it's found mainly in southeast Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan. Unfortunately, this species faces threats like habitat loss, invasive plants, and extreme weather. Parks Canada is working hard to protect these lizards by surveying populations, monitoring changes, and removing invasive species. AJM’s President & Founder (and his 9-year-old daughter) volunteered with Grasslands National Park to monitor the lizards and to learn about their biology and conservation! Now how is that for a science project! #AJMEnvironmental #ResponsibleDevelopment #ParksCanada #GrasslandsNationalPark #ShortHornedLizard

🍂 AJM is celebrating the Autumn Equinox! 🌍 As the days grow shorter and the air gets crisper, immerse yourself in the wonders of the changing season. The autumn equinox marks a special time when day and night are perfectly balanced, offering a unique opportunity to observe the intricate patterns of nature. Join us in celebrating the beauty of this transitional season. Take a moment to step outside, enjoy the vibrant fall colours, and maybe you'll spot an 'animal of autumn' (think, toads, owls, moose, and more!) or even an AJM biologist at work! 🍁 #AutumnEquinox #AJMEnvironmental #SustainableDevelopment #ResponsibleDevelopment
