While there are plenty of political posts on LinkedIn, this isn't one—well, actually, it is about politics. More specifically, it's about the role of design in supporting the democratic process. With the upcoming U.S. and likely Canadian elections on the horizon, it's critical to consider how good design can make or break an election. When design suffers, either through unwitting or malicious intent, democracy suffers—for example, the infamous "butterfly ballot" from the 2000 U.S. election. The confusing layout led to voter errors, including votes for the wrong candidate, which may have influenced the outcome of the entire election. A simple design flaw became a national crisis. Good design isn't just an aesthetic decision; it's a moral one, especially in the context of elections. Good design ensures accessibility, reduces confusion and builds trust in the electoral process. Let's make sure every voice is heard clearly. #UX #UXdesign #UserExperience #Elections #Electiondesign #Elections2024 #BallotDesign

The shift to remote work has brought new flexibility and accessibility to our work lives. It's also changed how we collaborate—especially in workshops. Digital tools like Miro, Zoom, and Google Jamboard have made it easier to bring people together without needing to be in the same room. But we're losing one key element in this transition: embodied cognition. Embodied cognition is the idea that our physical bodies and environmental interactions influence how we think and process information. When we're physically present in a workshop, our entire body is engaged in the problem-solving process. We use gestures to explain concepts, move around to interact with materials, and experience the space around us. All of these actions help our understanding and creativity. Digital tools try to replicate the environment, but no matter how sophisticated the tools are, remote workshops often reduce collaboration to head-and-hands work. We've all seen how different it feels to brainstorm over a Zoom call versus gathering around a whiteboard in a room. That's because, in person, we're using more than just our brains; we're engaging our whole bodies. The facilitator's challenge is how to compensate for this loss. How can we design digital workshops that better simulate the physicality of in-person collaboration? The move to remote workshops has brought many benefits, but it's worth recognizing what we're leaving behind. By understanding and acknowledging the role of embodied cognition, we can find new ways to bridge the gap between virtual and physical collaboration—and bring back some of the magic that in-person workshops offer. How has remote work changed the way you run workshops? Have you noticed the impact of losing physical interactions on your team's creativity and problem-solving? Watch Tedde van Gelderen's upcoming talk (https://lnkd.in/e_PndKuh) for more ideas on running more effective workshops. #UX #UXDesign #UXResearch #Workhops #UserExperience #

In one of our UX courses, we ask this question and are always intrigued to hear what people have experienced. Recently, a participant noted that she used her smartwatch to find her phone by making it ring. This simple trick made for an unexpected delight! 😃 We'd love to hear more. Please use the comments below to share your unexpected delights. And if you're intrigued about our courses, we have a session coming up, December 2-6. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gdvfMKsF
