Telling Alberta’s environmental good news stories since 1992

About us

The Alberta Emerald Foundation (AEF) is a registered charity with the unique mission of accelerating environmental excellence by recognizing Alberta’s leaders and driving the adoption of best practices through educational storytelling. Our journey began with the first Emerald Award ceremony in June 1992, marking the inception of our commitment to celebrating and showcasing environmental leaders. Now, as we move into our 33rd year, the impact of the Emerald Awards continues to resonate, with nearly 400 recipients and 900 finalists raising the bar in addressing environmental and climate change issues. To elevate our storytelling and recognition of Alberta's environmental leaders, the AEF created our sharing stories program in 2019, which features various digital content including The Emerald Documentary Series, What On EARTH Can We Do? podcast, and Environmental Speaker Series. With a legacy spanning over three decades, our work is just beginning. As we continue to tell these stories, we aim to ensure that the public and industry are not only made aware of environmental challenges but also informed of the impactful actions taken by Albertans. Through this awareness and education, we collectively build hope and inspiration, propelling us forward to protect our environment and build a better future.

  • We got the chance to check out Calgary's first nature-based approach to stormwater management in the developing community of Livingston. Designed by MAGNA Engineering Services Inc., the Livingston Storm Park not only mitigates stormwater impact but also contributes to the overall resilience of the community! By improving the water quality, enhancing air quality, and fostering biodiversity, the project plays a role in building resilience against the impacts of a changing climate. We got the full rundown of the project from Anton Skorobogatov, MAGNA's Research & Development Lead, during his interview for the upcoming season of the Emerald Documentary Series and we can't wait to help you learn more about this incredible project! Stay tuned for the series release this January where we'll share stories of environmental excellence from across Alberta 🌿 #naturebasedsolutions #Alberta #stormwatermanagement #Calgary

Yesterday marked the first day of filming for the Southern Alberta leg of the Emerald Documentary Series! We took the scenic drive down Highway 56 through Drumheller, marvelling at the breathtaking landscapes and even spotting a Pronghorn Antelope! 🦌 Once in Taber, we set up for our interview with Keith Hirsche, Founder and President of RenuWell Energy Solutions, a collaborative initiative to repurpose orphan well sites for small-scale solar photovoltaic installations. We had an eye-opening conversation about the impact of orphan well sites on landowners and the mutually beneficial path forward for all stakeholders. Curious to learn more about this innovative energy solution? Stay tuned for the release of this powerful story in January 2025, and see how solar is transforming Alberta’s energy landscape for the better! ☀

  • Last week, we ventured east of Edmonton with the Alberta Conservation Association to dive deep into their Land Management Program, where they’re working tirelessly to restore damaged habitats and protect the healthy ones across 237,365 acres of conservation sites. 🌲🌾 As we set up our cameras to film their upcoming feature in the Emerald Documentary Series, we witnessed firsthand how their efforts are not just preserving Alberta’s wildlife but also ensuring that these spaces remain vibrant and accessible for all of us. Whether you're an avid outdoor enthusiast or simply care about the natural beauty that defines our province, this is a story you won’t want to miss. Want to see how these conservation efforts are making a difference for Alberta's wildlife—and for you? • Congratulations to our partner, Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA) on their joint announcement with the Government of Alberta on the expansion of Alberta's electronics recycling program! Starting next year, #Alberta will begin permanently #recycling more than 500 additional electronic items, including cell phones, power tools and microwaves. We can't wait to see the impact this program will have on the province. These electronic items can be dropped off at any of the 365 registered recycling depots in 148 municipalities across the province!

Exciting News from ARMA! As of April 1, 2025, we're proud to announce the official expansion of Alberta's electronics recycling program, marking a significant milestone in our journey toward a sustainable future. Our ePilot initiative has paved the way for this achievement, and we’re thrilled to share the results: 🌱 Over 21,268 tonnes of previously unrecycled electronics have found a new life. 📈 Our list of recyclable electronics has grown from just 12 to over 500 types. 🔋 We've successfully collected around 2,800 solar panels! But this expansion is about more than just numbers—it's about innovation, foresight, and a commitment to a greener future. The success of our ePilot, including the introduction of solar panel recycling, has confirmed our belief in the importance of addressing renewables. As technology rapidly advances with solar panels, wind turbines, and EV batteries, we’re stepping up to meet the challenge of managing and recycling the waste generated by these innovations. Through our Innovation Grant Program, in partnership with Quantum Lifecycle Partners, we’re driving forward new recycling technologies that will not only protect our environment but also create jobs and boost Alberta's economy. A huge thank you to Minister Schultz, the Government of Alberta, and all our partners for their unwavering support. Together, we're building a future where waste is a thing of the past. #Sustainability #ElectronicsRecycling #Innovation #FutureWithoutWaste
