Telling Alberta’s environmental good news stories since 1992
About us
The Alberta Emerald Foundation (AEF) is a registered charity with the unique mission of accelerating environmental excellence by recognizing Alberta’s leaders and driving the adoption of best practices through educational storytelling. Our journey began with the first Emerald Award ceremony in June 1992, marking the inception of our commitment to celebrating and showcasing environmental leaders. Now, as we move into our 33rd year, the impact of the Emerald Awards continues to resonate, with nearly 400 recipients and 900 finalists raising the bar in addressing environmental and climate change issues. To elevate our storytelling and recognition of Alberta's environmental leaders, the AEF created our sharing stories program in 2019, which features various digital content including The Emerald Documentary Series, What On EARTH Can We Do? podcast, and Environmental Speaker Series. With a legacy spanning over three decades, our work is just beginning. As we continue to tell these stories, we aim to ensure that the public and industry are not only made aware of environmental challenges but also informed of the impactful actions taken by Albertans. Through this awareness and education, we collectively build hope and inspiration, propelling us forward to protect our environment and build a better future.

This week, we visited the birthplace of forest habitat restoration in North-Eastern Alberta - Cenovus Energy's Caribou Habitat Restoration Project! Located in the Cold Lake area, this project is focused on restoring seismic disturbances to support healthy caribou populations. 🌲🦌 With over 100,000 hectares treated and 1.6 million trees planted, it’s the largest project of its kind globally. With the guidance of Michael Cody, Manager of Environment and Regulatory Services, we had the opportunity to see the project's impact firsthand! While we didn't spot any caribou, the transformation of the landscape speaks volumes about the project's success. Stay tuned for Cenovus' feature in the upcoming season of the Emerald Documentary Series, coming January 2025! 🎥🌿

Emerald Award alumni, Blindman Brewing, cleaned up at the Carbon Capture Canada awards last week! A huge congratulations to these innovators and leaders 🙌 Learn more about their first-in-Canada carbon capture technology 👇 https://lnkd.in/gvjeKcvt
Shell, Mitsubishi Power, ATCO, SaskPower, and I guess Blindman Brewing? Our little ol' brewery in sunny Lacombe Tourism was up against some heavyweights at the Carbon Capture Canada awards last week. And we pulled off the upset, winning the big one, Carbon Capture Project of the Year. As well as picking up the Honourable Mention in the CCUS First Adopter category. Oh, and I was personally nominated for CCUS Leader of the Year. I'll just say that if our wins are a ploy by the judges to try and score some free beer, let me tell you, it's working!
