With the abundance of AI detection software around, it's extremely important to highlight that they are ineffective and inaccurate. But what should re-assure us, even more now than before, is this research by Stanford University. There has been no significant increase in cheating amongst student since the advent of ChatGPT!
Some key takeaways are:
1. The seemingly ubiquitous nature of AI and ChatGPT has not made cheating 'more accessible' in any way. So, if a student was not inclined to cheat before, they won't begin now.
2. Race and household income both played a role in the awareness and use of ChatGPT. "72 percent of white students had at least some knowledge of ChatGPT..." And, households with incomes above $75,000 were 34% more aware of ChatGPT than those who had incomes of $30,000 or below.
3. Banning the use of AI and similar chatbots won't address the root cause of why students cheat. There is a need for a much closer look at how to tackle the very real issues of student engagement, of having students feel a sense of ownership in what they learn and how they learn it, and having purpose in their learning overall.
