    Instead of getting sucked into the vortex of bad news, here’s some good news: there are great jobs out there, and excellent employers hiring talented people. Just look at these 𝗧𝗪𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗬 recent placements we made across Canada. Positions spanning industries and sectors, permanent and contract, hybrid, remote and onsite—something for everyone. Yes, the labour market is tougher than it was, and for sure we’re in turbulent times, but if you’re looking for work, take heart. We’re still seeing interesting roles and still working with Canadian employers who really are striving to achieve their best, despite headwinds. Here are three employment trends I’ve noticed lately: ➡️ 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸: When the labour market is uncertain, it’s normal for employers to offer contract roles, both short and long term. 𝗧𝗶𝗽: Instead of holding out for the perfect permanent job, consider a temp/contract role to keep yourself in the labour market, shore up your experience, build your resume, show you’re keen and—critically—meet new people. It’s always a good idea to build your professional network. ➡️ 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲: During the pandemic (can you believe it was 5 years ago this week that COVID was declared?), clients were frantically trying to hire as fast as they could and making job offers after one interview. In today’s market, however, we’re seeing more thoughtful, considered hiring with a deeper screening and selection process -- so it’s taking significantly longer to fill permanent positions. 𝗧𝗶𝗽: Be patient. Know it might take a while and don’t take the waiting game personally. ➡️ 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀: For example, given the cyber safety landscape, we’re seeing new roles in all things cyber. And when you think of all the tumultuous changes we’ve seen in the workplace, it makes sense that HR roles are also trending. HR leaders got burned out during COVID and many left their jobs seeking something new. And as employers prepare for challenging times ahead, they’re looking for HR people to manage them. Lastly, with projected cost-cutting ahead, we’re seeing increased demand for skilled finance people who can control costs, manage cash flow, and offer data insights and informed advice. 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿: Job search frustration is part of the process. While you’re searching, stay focused on what you can control. Talk with real people IRL. Volunteer. Structure your time to keep applying. Go on that coffee date with someone in your business network. Polish your resume. Take online classes, many are free. And be open to what the job market brings.   • Last Thursday, Altis had the pleasure of teaming up with the Schulich Centre for Career Design (CCD) at the Schulich School of Business - York University to deliver an engaging "Accelerating Career Growth" session.   We welcomed an engaged group of 40 students — from 4th year BBA candidates to MBA hopefuls and seasoned professionals in fields like supply chain, finance & accounting, healthcare analytics and AI — to explore the many facets of today's challenging job market.   In one hour, five of our team members led an insights-packed conversation spanning a broad range of topics essential for career advancement, offering practical tips on:   ✔️ Optimizing LinkedIn profiles and networking effectively ✔️ Crafting a standout resume that highlights strengths AND tells a unique career story, even when pivoting industries or addressing resume gaps (read: in today’s labour market, it's time to normalize gaps!) ✔️ Using AI to boost your job search while remaining authentic as a candidate   We also offered advice on turning job search setbacks into learning opportunities, with some practical takeaways on staying motivated.   What truly set the session apart was the lively Q&A and networking portion. Our team loved fielding all the thoughtful questions from the students, reinforcing that career growth isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach; it’s about owning your journey, adapting to change and having a bit of fun while doing it.   A special shout-out to our stellar team members Liesa Weinrauch, Shenikia C., Austin D., Shina Sharma🌺 and Samara Vandersloot. Your dedication and preparation made the session both insightful and engaging. And many thanks to Shaunna-Marie Kerr and the entire CCD team for coordinating such a seamless event to help nurture talent. Around here, we call her the Queen of Contracts— and for good reason. She’s known for her speed, precision and incredible ability to connect with candidates. Her positive, always-ready-to-help attitude, sharp attention to detail and next-level organization skills make her the ultimate team player. If there’s a role to fill, you can bet Linda’s already on it! She’s also got a competitive streak, constantly pushing herself to grow— whether it’s building stronger candidate connections, smashing her KPIs or outdoing her personal best in perm placements last year. (Oh, and she casually took the Altis award for Most Total Placements by a Recruiter in Q4. No big deal.😉) Outside of work, Linda’s love for travel took her to Vancouver, Greece and Chicago last year.
