“I still like to laugh until my stomach hurts!” Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia may pose challenges, but they don’t define who we are. If you’re feeling like an outlier, frustrated, or overwhelmed, remember—it’s not your fault. These brain diseases can be isolating, but together, we can break the stigma and embrace joy, laughter, and connection. Comment “GUIDE” below if you’re in need of some support! Our #StillMeYYC community member Aimee is the perfect inspiration for what it means to do enjoyable things with the people you love, despite the impacts of dementia: “My dad is still him; fun, positive, kind, athletic, and wise. His needs may be unique due to dementia, but he deserves to be honoured and respected.” Growing up in an active household, Aimee’s dad Pat was a powerhouse in the sports world. From downhill and cross-country skiing to running, camping, and sailing, he was always on the move. Pat was also a senior partner at a chartered accountant firm and a key figure in the sports community. Knowing this about her dad, Aimee finds ways for him to be out in the fresh air, and enjoy some of those things in different ways. Let’s celebrate the unique spirit of every individual, no matter the challenges they face with the disease. That’s what the #StillMeYYC movement is all about – celebration, recognition and community.
